Whats next for the Jets?
March 9, 2008
The New York Jets have spent a lot of money so far this off-season in free agency but it doesn’t look like they’re done spending just yet. What other moves could they be making? Well looking at their roster they still need to make plenty. Sorry Jets fans, but its true. Lets look at some of the possibilities.
Draft - The Jets have the #6 pick and the fans really want RB Darren McFadden. After all the signings this pick could become more likely if he falls to them at that slot. The team is now in the position where they can make more of the right pick then drafting completely out of necessity. With all of the signings thou there is also that possibility where they might trade down now as the #6 pick would cost quite a bit more money against the cap.
Now free agency, there is plenty of players they are still looking at. Here they are.
- The NY Post reports that the player highest on the Jets wish list is Colts tight end Ben Utecht, a player the Jets would not have to give compensation for.
- The Jets have also been speaking to Dolphins RB Jesse Chatman and Ravens RB Musa Smith.
- There were reports this week that Patriots Safety Eugene Wilson was close to signing a deal with the Jets. A deal between the two sides is looking less and less likely now. Wilson’s price tag keeps going up and with all the money the Jets have already spent it looks like he may have priced himself out of their range.
Now, the DeWayne Robertson situation. The Jets did try to trade him to the Cincinnati Bengals and had no luck doing so, as the Bengals backed out of the trade at the last minute. The deal called for the Jets to get a 4th and 5th round pick, pretty low numbers for a former first rounder. Trading him for such a low price could cause some bad blood between the sides if Robertson makes it all the way to Jets camp in the summer. A league source says its “50-50″ that Robertson is dealt before the start of the 2008 season. After all of these signings, especially that of Kris Jenkins the Jets could even ask for a lower draft pick just to be able to dump Robertson. If he wants to stay with the team thou I’m sure they’ll be making him restructure his contract.
So basically one of the busiest teams this off-season isn’t done with their splurge yet. Will all these moves translate into a winning team? Should be interesting to watch come September. The Jets have more pressure on them after their fellow NYC team has won another Super Bowl.
Jets just keep on spending
March 3, 2008
Unlike the Cleveland Browns who keep signing talent, the New York Jets are just throwing money away this off-season. To start the Jets signed Kris Jenkins to a $30 million 5 year deal with $9.5 million guaranteed. Then today they made a few signings. The first is LB Calvin Pace from the Arizona Cardinals at a price tag of 6-year $42 million with a whopping $22 million guaranteed. The other big signing was right tackle Damien Woody from the Detroit Lions for $25.5 million over 5 years and a $11 million in guarantees. So lets do the math $42.5 million in guaranteed money to three players. Now let me tell you why what they are doing is literally throwing away money.
- First, both offensive tackles have had serious weight problems in their careers. Kris Jenkins contract calls for him to be weighed up to 10 times during the season, where he gets paid $25,000 a weigh-in if he is at a specified weight. The fat boy is being paid extra just to keep in shape!!!! Woody has also had weight problems throughout his career and is also coming off shoulder surgery.
- Second, the team has been paying way much more money then any other team in the NFL has been offering. The Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals were both interested in Pace but neither would have gave Pace anywhere near the money the Jets gave him. Woody is an upgrade over Anthony Clement but its also highly unlikely that any team would have given him that kind of money.
- One hit wonders? Is Pace the real deal? He’s had one good season in his NFL Career and the Jets payed him like a perennial pro-bowler. He’s now one of the highest paid LB’s in the history of football. (how many times have we said that already about players). He’s only got 14 sacks in 67 career games, with 6.5 coming last season. Now last year he did play in a 3-4 for defense for the first time in his career which he will be playing in under Eric Mangini.
Now I say these deals are throwing away money, but at the same time they can look like huge deals. Pace could wind up being a super star in that defense. Jenkins and Woody could both lose weight and rebound and have two great seasons. All could be. But yet all paid like they do it consistently. We’ll see what happens but right now I say the Jets are throwing away money that could be used for much more players to build a team with.
Faneca signs with the Jets.
March 1, 2008
The year of grossly over-paying free agents has continued. The New York Jets today signed offensive guard Alan Faneca away from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Faneca will receive $40 million over 5 years, with $21 million of it guaranteed. The Jets were originally seeking only four years, but added a fifth to make sure there no snags in getting this done. My guess Faneca is gone after three, as he is already 32 years old.
Outside of being very over paid, this is a pretty good and much needed signing for the Jets. The team really struggled rushing in between the tackles last season. New York ranked 26th in the league last season in total yards and 19th in rushing yards per game, so having Faneca will be a big improvement there. Outside of Faneca its a fairly young line so he should provide some veteran leadership as well. “Alan can’t wait to work with those guys,” his agent Rick Smith said. “He likes to take young guys under his wing and help them develop.”
Panthers and Jets reach deal for Jenkins
February 29, 2008
The New York Jets and Carolina Panthers reached a deal early Friday morning for defensive tackle Kris Jenkins. In the deal, the Jets receive Jenkins while the Panthers get 3rd and 5th round picks in this years NFL Draft. A relatively minor deal, I would think the Jets would look to rework Jenkins contract and lock him up for a few more seasons after giving up two picks. If they don’t try to restructure that would just be plain stupid.
Now to this deal, I think its stupid I really do. I know plenty are going to disagree with me but thats fine I think this a stupid deal. The Jets are in need of many things and instead of trying to acquire draft picks, they’re dealing them away and spending money left and right. Haven’t they learned that’s not going to build a winner in the NFL? What was the last team that bought their way into a title game? Yea good answer none recently and don’t say the Patriots. They’ve been there a while and with cheaper free agent picks ups (for the most part).
But lets look at this Jenkins, he’s good but is he really worth two picks? Yea he is a Pro-Browler but we all know the NFL’s selection of players for that is a joke. He’s already 28 years (29 by opening weekend) and has had injury problems. He’s not a pass rusher any more, he’s had only 6.5 sacks over his past 4 seasons in 37 games. In Mangini’s 3-4 scheme he might play better, but remember he’s played in a 4-3 his entire career and barely played like a nose tackle then. We know he’ll be a run stopper but who knows if his fat self will even show up to camp at his playing weight. He’s been known to show up overweight.
Please post your thoughts in the forums cause i would LOVE to see arguments disagreeing with me. Maybe I’m missing something about this guy, but i don’t see how he’s worth so much.
Vilma close to being a Saint
February 28, 2008
So every five minutes it changes where this guy is going to go. Last two days its been Jonathan Vilma to the Detroit Lions in almost every report. But thats the beauty of this week, no deal is official till midnight Friday. The latest rumor comes from the New Orleans Times-Picayune, that says the New Orleans Saints are close to acquiring the middle linebacker from the New York Jets. The deal could be announced later tonight or sometime Friday afternoon.
Other teams that looked into Vilma were the Washington Redskins but they never got truly into the mix. The Lions have been all over Vilma but don’t really have what the Jets are looking for and thats draft picks. The Jets are building this crappy team up and need as many as possible. The Saints on the other hand are more willing to deal picks, Newsday is assuming the Saints will send a 3rd round draft pick to the Jets.
Vilma given permission to seek trade
February 22, 2008
The New York Jets have given line backer Jonathan Vilma permission to shop himself around for a possible trade. Now this DOES NOT mean Vilma will be trade, he’s just getting the chance to look around the league and see what teams want him. What it does mean is that both Vilma and Jets management both are admitting he isn’t a good fit for coach Eric Mangini’s 3-4 style of defense.
OK, to the details, Vilma officially has 1 year left on his current rookie contract. So if the Jets do not deal him this off-season they will most likely lose him next year and receive no compensation. Jonathan is looking for a long-term extension if he is dealt, so he will be talking with teams trying to work out a new contract. If a deal is reached, it would be pending a trade. Which means that team that signs him would then have to call up the Jets and work out a trade.
What teams could use a linebacker, who is best suited for a 4-3 defense? Early front runners would be the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New Orleans Saints. The Saints currently have an offer out to Zach Thomas, so if he accepts that you could cross the Saints off the list. Now with the Jags, former Jets defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson is now an assistant coach. Henderson’s 4-3 defense is the system that produced Vilma’s 2004 Defensive Rookie of the Year season.
Another rumor is the St Louis Rams, who would be willing to be trade their #2 pick in the draft to the Jets for the #6 and Vilma. That deal would most likely be a big stretch thou.
Vilma, if fully recovered from last years knee problems, could be a very big contributor for any team. He’s a young player who has proven he can play with the big boys. Its always unfortunate thou that certain players just don’t fit in new styles brought in by new coaches. I firmly believe most Jets fans would hate to lose Vilma, but hey they love their Mangenious.
