Boldin wants to fly
April 22, 2008
According to NFL Network’s Adam Schefter, Arizona Cardinals’ wide receiver Anquan Boldin wants to fly. No Eagles fans, he doesn’t mean fly like an Eagle (well yet), he just wants to get the hell out of Arizona. Can’t say I blame him after Larry Fitzgerald’s contract extension, with his talent he probably doesn’t want to play second fiddle to anyone.
Shefter says the Cardinals have informed him that they will not grant his request but that a team could still possibly blow them away with a draft-day offer. He speculates that the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles could be one of those teams.
Yesterday, I wrote a blog where i said if Boldin was on the market he’s the one the Eagles should go after. I’ll stand by that statement today. If Boldin becomes available he’d be the most attainable with what the Eagles have been offering teams. A deal of Boldin for Lito Sheppard and a couple mid to late round picks would be a great deal for both sides.
Arizona still needs depth and defensive help, they’d handle both of those with Lito and draft picks, pending they draft well with those picks. The Eagles, well they’d get their #1 wide out, and make all those Iggles fans happy.
Lions refuse Eagles trade offer
April 21, 2008
As the draft gets closer, the rumors about Detroit Lions wide receiver Roy Williams heat up. We can also thank GCobb.com for that. Former Philadelphia Eagles player and current radio analyst Mike Quick said there should be news on Williams this week. Garry Cobb, a Philadelphia (key word) media personality, reports “that means the Cowboys, Redskins or the Eagles will probably wind up with the receiver.” Is any of it true?
Well its definite truth the Eagles are desperately looking for a #1 wide receiver. Everyone knows about their pursuit of Randy Moss. Their trade offers for Larry Fitzgerald, Roy Williams, Chad Johnson and now even Anquan Boldin (who i think could be the most attainable for what they are offering).
Profootballtalk.com reports that the Eagles were turned down on their latest offer to the Lions. Philadelphia offered corner back Lito Sheppard and a draft pick not to long ago and was quickly refused. The Lions reiterated today that Williams is not available. Reporters asked President Matt Millen today if there was anyway Williams could be traded, and he just flat out laughed at him. So, when redirected to coach Rod Marinelli, he responded by saying “Don’t even ask me”. The whole time, Millen was still laughing.
There’s no doubt the Eagles are going to keep trying for Williams, but unless they offer a first or second round pick with Lito, I can’t see the deal happening. Lito is one of the better corners in the league, there is no doubt about that, but the Eagles may be over-valuing him in these trade talks.
Anquan Boldin’s name has surfaced recently, and I think this could be the teams best option in a trade. His numbers have dropped the last 2 seasons, but thats no surprise when you’re teamed with Larry Fitzgerald. Boldin could be a huge factor if he’s brought in, that might be the deal the the Iggles should really concentrate on.
Teams dropping from Chillar race
March 18, 2008
As time goes by teams keep dropping from the race to sign St Louis Rams LB Brandon Chillar. Teams aren’t dropping from the race by the usual reasons thou, health scares, price, years, etc it’s because of his insistence on waiting for the Arizona Cardinals. Chillar, originally from California, would love nothing better then to play closer to home. The best option for him to do so is to play for the Cardinals, so he’s waiting for them.
What’s the problem with the Cardinals then? What’s taking so long to get a deal done? The problem , cap space. Till Larry Fitzgerald’s contract is restructured the Cards have no money to sign anyone. Things are so bad in Arizona they’re having to cut players just to sign players. They needed a new long snapper and only way to bring one in at the time being was to cut a player. That player, Sean Morey, is expected to resign once Fitz is restructured. (Probably with a small little bonus for willing to be made expendable).
What teams have dropped out of the Chillar race? Both the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants have taken themselves out of the running, as neither team feels like playing in his waiting game. His former team, the Rams, are still in the running thou. They want Chillar back and don’t mind hanging around a little longer. If Chillar wants to guarantee himself a decent check for next year he may have to give in soon and re-up with the Rams.
Eagles continue shopping Lito
March 4, 2008
The Philadelphia Eagles continue to shop Pro-Bowl corner Lito Sheppard, but have not yet found a deal to their liking. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, a league source has said the Eagles have been receiving offers and most of those include both draft picks and players. The same league source also said something I said only a few days ago, FORGET THE IDEA of Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. “They’re not going to trade him,” the source said, which is also what GM Rod Graves said at the scouting combine.
I can’t blame the Eagles one bit for taking their time in making a deal. Trading Lito is not a necessity, so they can wait till they get an offer that blows their socks off. A combination of high draft picks, or maybe mid-draft picks with solid young players would be a great deal. If they don’t trade him so what, they’ll just have two really good corners, and then Sheldon Brown playing the nickel corner, one great trio there.
In other news, the Eagles are still looking for a wide receiver, and the biggest name on their radar is former Denver Broncos player Javon Walker. The team wanted him in 2006 before the Packers dealt him to Denver.
Jets just keep on spending
March 3, 2008
Unlike the Cleveland Browns who keep signing talent, the New York Jets are just throwing money away this off-season. To start the Jets signed Kris Jenkins to a $30 million 5 year deal with $9.5 million guaranteed. Then today they made a few signings. The first is LB Calvin Pace from the Arizona Cardinals at a price tag of 6-year $42 million with a whopping $22 million guaranteed. The other big signing was right tackle Damien Woody from the Detroit Lions for $25.5 million over 5 years and a $11 million in guarantees. So lets do the math $42.5 million in guaranteed money to three players. Now let me tell you why what they are doing is literally throwing away money.
- First, both offensive tackles have had serious weight problems in their careers. Kris Jenkins contract calls for him to be weighed up to 10 times during the season, where he gets paid $25,000 a weigh-in if he is at a specified weight. The fat boy is being paid extra just to keep in shape!!!! Woody has also had weight problems throughout his career and is also coming off shoulder surgery.
- Second, the team has been paying way much more money then any other team in the NFL has been offering. The Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals were both interested in Pace but neither would have gave Pace anywhere near the money the Jets gave him. Woody is an upgrade over Anthony Clement but its also highly unlikely that any team would have given him that kind of money.
- One hit wonders? Is Pace the real deal? He’s had one good season in his NFL Career and the Jets payed him like a perennial pro-bowler. He’s now one of the highest paid LB’s in the history of football. (how many times have we said that already about players). He’s only got 14 sacks in 67 career games, with 6.5 coming last season. Now last year he did play in a 3-4 for defense for the first time in his career which he will be playing in under Eric Mangini.
Now I say these deals are throwing away money, but at the same time they can look like huge deals. Pace could wind up being a super star in that defense. Jenkins and Woody could both lose weight and rebound and have two great seasons. All could be. But yet all paid like they do it consistently. We’ll see what happens but right now I say the Jets are throwing away money that could be used for much more players to build a team with.
Eagles shopping Lito
March 1, 2008
Rumors have been flying out of Philadelphia, that the Eagles are shopping Lito Sheppard after last night’s signing of Asante Samuel. No surprise there really. The biggest rumor has been that the Eagles are going to send Lito and ??? to the Arizona Cardinals for Larry Fitzgerald. Guess what Eagles fans? It’s HIGHLY unlikely, its just another one of those local philly rumors that are born in fantasy land.
It is true that the Eagles have approached the Cardinals. That much is true! Arizona RM Rod Graves on Thursday the rumors about a deal “nothing but smoke”. Graves actually said the team has been in negotiations with Fitzgerald’s agent about keeping him in Arizona long-term. He’s a player that Arizona can’t lose and you know what Larry actually wants to stay in the desert. “I’m not looking to be traded. I don’t want to be traded,” Fitzgerald said to ESPN.com in a chat last night.
There are other teams interested in Lito, who wouldn’t? When he’s healthy and on his game he’s a solid corner. A team that could be really interested would be the New England Patriots, they having a gaping hole at the corner back position now. A trade would be good for the Eagles in the fact that they can either move up in the draft or just fill some more holes. I still feel keeping him would be just as valuable thou as 3 solid corners would be a big plus. A team that loves to blitz could blitz even more with 3 shut down corners.

Fitzgerald richest WR ever?
February 24, 2008
Rumor has it that the Arizona Cardinals are going to do whatever it takes to keep WR Larry Fitzgerald. So much so, that they have offered Fitzgerald a contract that would make him the richest wide receiver in the history of the NFL. Now Cardinals fans don’t worry Fitzgerald is NOT a free agent so the team is in no danger of losing him just yet. What’s wrong is the team has no salary cap maneuverability to make any significant moves this off-season. Fitzgerald will count almost $14 million himself against this years cap, so the team would like to renegotiate his deal. Due to his performance his cap hit would be $14.6 mil in 2008 and $17.35 mil in 2009.
A top player who receives an acceptable offer “has to become vested in the future of the football team,” team GM Rod Graves said. “In many cases, we’ve seen examples of players willing to take restructured deals. They’re willing to do something that ensures the progress of the team in terms of talent building. That’s what I expect our players to do.”
The team is looking to lock Fitzgerald long-term to the term of 6 years, and the deal would once again make him the most expensive wide receiver in league history. His numbers back up that kind of offer, last year he had 100 catches for 1409 yards and 10 touchdowns. In his brief 4 year career he’s already caught 330 balls for over 4500 yards and 34 touchdowns. Now Fitzgerald is looking for a 4-year deal that would let him become a free agent at the age of 28. If you think he’ll be the highest paid ever now, wait till age 28 if he hits the market he’d be in his prime then and he knows he’d get paid more.
For the future success of the Cardinals, the team needs Fitzgerald to restructure his deal. The team has various holes that need to be filled for them to be a truly competitive and playoff caliber team. No one player can take up that much of your cap, especially at a position like wide receiver. Those are top flight QB numbers that he’ll be making the next couple years. I think Fitzgerald would be wise to take the 6-year offer that makes him insanely rich, cause if he does decide to wait a couple years and hit free agency who knows if he’ll get paid that much. One injury in the NFL, and you’re done. Take the money and run, and maybe get yourself a playoff berth.
