Whose Youboty staying in Buffalo
May 28, 2008
For the moment, the Cleveland Browns won’t be acquiring Ashton Youboty from the Buffalo Bills. It’s no secret that the Browns need corner back depth, but as you can tell by this they are setting the bar low. Looking more for positional depth (Youboty), then outstanding starter (Lito Sheppard). So, right now, the Bills aren’t considering trading Youboty, but that could change as the team has quite a bit of depth in the secondary. Read more
Browns getting desperate at corner
May 21, 2008
The one thing the Cleveland Browns did not do during their off-season spending spree was address positional depth. The Browns were pretty weak at corner back after trading Leigh Bodden to the Detroit Lions for defensive lineman Shaun Rogers. So initially that left a starting position open, that was going to come down to a battle between Daven Holly and Brandon McDonald. Well good drawn out plans, tend to fall apart at times and in the NFL that is usually due to the dreaded torn knee ligament. During today’s practice Browns CB Daven Holly did just that. Holly suffered ligament and cartilage damage while jumping to break up a pass to Braylon Edwards, he is now most likely done for the entire 2008 season. Where do the Browns go to replace him? Broncos add wideouts, but who sticks?
April 14, 2008
The Denver Broncos are busy bolstering their wide receiving corps this week, by signing Samie Parker and Darrell Jackson. The team inked Parker to a deal today and according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, should sign Jackson sometime on Tuesday.
Parker, a former Kansas City Chiefs, provides some valuable depth should Brandon Marshall struggle in his recovery from his recent arm injury. Parker is still only 27 years old, but did miss almost of all of last season due to injury. Last year he played in 7 games catching 24 balls for 298 yards with 2 touchdowns. So if he stays healthy, he can still be a productive receiver.
Jackson was cut from the San Francisco 49ers, largely due to a huge roster bonus he was to receive. He was due to make a combined $4 million in salary and bonuses in 2008. He’s still a very productive receiver catching 46 balls for 500 yards in the very anemic Niners offense. If in fact he does sign tomorrow, he’ll compete with Parker for the fourth spot.
So which one sticks? Well, if Brandon Marshall isn’t ready to go full throttle in camp, you can expect both players to make the team. They’d need the depth to protect themselves, hence the reason they are signing multiple players. But if Marshall is fully healthy, who would get the leg up. I believe its Jackson, based purely on health and previous career stats. Jackson did have a huge drop off in numbers last season but look where he played. Who do you think may stick? Post a comment and let us know.

Quinn looks to steal Browns QB job
April 13, 2008
Brady Quinn is as determined as ever to be the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback in 2008. “If I’m not doing that, it’s a huge injustice to our team and to everyone else in our organization,” Quinn said at teammate Shaun Smith’s charity bowling event. “That’s the goal and that’s where I want to be.” Quinn has participated fully in all team off-season programs so far and plans on keeping that up. He’s even been working out pretty hard on his own to prepare for training camp. “That’s my thing,” he said. “I just try to outwork everyone.”
After receiving his big contract extension, Derek Anderson figures to have a lock on the teams starting QB job. At the recent NFL Owners meetings, GM Phil Savage said that Quinn “would really have to play lights out” or Anderson “would have to play really poorly” for the 2nd-year backup to overtake the starting job. Quinn knows that and its a good sign that he is still working out like he has a chance for that position. Quinn said: “The only thing I know is that it seems like there’s a little small window and all I need is a chance. It doesn’t matter how big it is, just give me a chance and I’m going to try to take advantage of it.”
This should be an entertaining battle come training camp. With two QB’s making starter money on the team, one is eventually going to have to go. Could Quinn’s hard work pay off and maybe get him a trade to a team he could start of? It’s possible. Could it force the team to trade Anderson? Definitely, possible. Thats long term thinking thou, personally I feel both QBs will be with the Browns through the end of the 2008 season, no matter how either plays. Now could there be controversy between the two? That is probably the most likely, just look at other teams when they’ve had two very capable signal callers. Talking to Quinn thou, there is no problems between the guys. “We have a great quarterback room,” he said.
As a Notre Dame fan, I can’t wait to see Quinn get a chance to shine!

Browns continue signing players
March 1, 2008
The Cleveland Browns have continued with their spending spree, by signing former New England Patriots receiver Donte Stallworth. Stallworth gets a 7-year contract worth $35 million, there is $10 million in that contract that is guaranteed. He’ll receive $17 million over the first 4 years of the contract. This is another good signing for the Browns and pretty good for Donte as well.
For the Browns they get more depth at wideout and some speed. This is now a very mult-dimensional offense that Derek Anderson should have a field day with on Sundays. They now have Braylon Edwards, Joe Jurevicius and Stallworth as the receivers, with Kellen Winslow playing the tight end position.
With Randy Moss on the market, and Stallworth playing second fiddle there as he did in the regular season I wondered how big of a contract he may get. Well he got paid alright, and pretty good for a player who has never had a 1000-yard receiving season in his 6-year career. His best season was in 2005 when he caught 70 balls for 945 yards.
Good signing for both teams, and I’ll say there will be a lot of celebrating in the Dog Pound this year.

A Shaun Rogers surprise in Cleveland
March 1, 2008
The Cincinnati Bengals are not very happy with the Detroit Lions right now. The two sides had a trade in place for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers but at the last moment the Lions pulled the deal off the table and shipped him to the Cleveland Browns, the Bengals division rival. The deal calls for the Browns to get Rogers while sending corner back Leigh Bodden and a 3rd round draft pick to the Lions. This is a very good deal for both sides in my opinion.
For the Browns, their off-season windfall continues, but at a risk. The Browns have now re-signed QB Derek Anderson, traded for DE Corey Williams and now added a mammoth sized DT. The risk is the team now has NO draft picks until the 4th round of the draft. The team felt they wouldn’t be able to get quality lineman thou in the 2nd or 3rd rounds of this caliber. “I knew there was going to be some sacrifice involved in trying to obtain a player we wanted, but in my mind, in our estimation, a legitimate veteran defensive lineman who’s still got a lot of upside potential seemed to be a good fit for us,” GM Phil Savage said.
The Browns aren’t done either they are entertaining wide receiver Donte Stallworth, defensive end / linebacker Travis LaBoy, linebacker Nick Griesen and trying to bring in linebacker Clark Haggans. This is a team looking to drastically upgrade their already talented base and make a strong playoff push.
The Lions well they didn’t want to pay Rogers and franchised him to make sure they got something in return. The franchise tag calls for 2 first-rounders if someone signs him, which usually winds up unlikely. The Lions had no choice but to trade him for less then that or they’d be stuck paying him quite a bit of money next year. Bodden is a talented player, but some in Cleveland felt he took a step back last year in his development, regardless he’ll be Detroit’s #1 corner next year.
I think its safe to say thou that Bengals management won’t be talking to the Lions front office anytime soon.
About face, Browns sign Anderson
March 1, 2008
I’d swear with how negotiations have gone between QB Derek Anderson and the Cleveland Browns, I’d think everyone on both sides was a woman. (no offense ladies I’m just joking). But honestly, neither side could make up their mind on what they wanted at least they decided before it wound up being to late.
Anderson signed a 3-year deal worth $26 million, with $14.5 guaranteed. Anderson is just 24, so this should make him a free agent right in his prime. Anderson signed for less years then he wanted but at the same time he did get the Browns to up their offer on the money side. So much for the Browns being prepared for the Brady Quinn era to begin.
Not much more spin to put on how this effects both sides, it seems like every day I was talking about them. But I do now believe this was the best move for the team and Anderson. And if the Browns are able to add Donte Stallworth to the mix this offense can be really explosive. Mix that with all the defensive moves and it could be a special season in the Dog Pound.
