Battle in the Broncos backfield

June 13, 2008

Andre HallAs mini-camp ends for the Denver Broncos, the positional battles begin to heat up especially at the running back position. No there is no competition for the starting job, Selvin Young is pretty much locked into that position barring an injury. The real battle is taking place for his back-up, that is taking place between 2nd year back Andre Hall and the newly acquired Michael Pittman. Rookie back Ryan Torain is a distant fourth right now in the mix, which isn’t a surprise as he’s still got to prove himself. So who looks like they’re going into training camp as the #2 guy? Broncos crowded backfield

May 27, 2008

Michael PittmanThe Denver Broncos today agreed to a one-year contract with free agent running back Michael Pittman. This now gives the Broncos five backs, in what is quickly becoming one of the most crowded backfields in the NFL. The Broncos now have Travis Henry, Selvin Young, Andre Hall, Ryan Torain and Pittman. Having so many backs on this team, is definitely raising question marks. You’ve got three young guys, two veterans, so who gets the touches? All you know is this. In a Mike Shanahan led offense, whomever it is will perform well. Read more

Denver wideout battle

May 19, 2008

Brandon MarshallThe battle for #2 wide receiver is definitely heating up for the Denver Broncos. The key competitors in this are Samie Parker, Darrell Jackson, Keary Colbert, Brandon Stokley and 2nd round pick Eddie Royal. The #1 slot is of course locked in, with Brandon Marshall. Marshall is ahead of schedule in his rehab, as he’s currently running routes with the team but not yet allowed to catch passes (He should be cleared by June 22nd and fully ready for training camp). But, let’s take a look at the players involved and who has a chance at the job, and who will be working the waiver wire. Read more

Mare signs with Seahawks

March 27, 2008

This is an update to a post I made just a couple hours ago. So much for my thinking of Olindo Mare signing with the Denver Broncos. Mare signed a deal with the Seattle Seahawks this evening. What did come down to, money of course. Mare got a 2-year $3.5 million deal from the ‘Hawks, so this means Denver must of been outbid since he really liked their deal too. What I don’t understand is he goes from a favorable situation in Denver to a rough climate in Seattle. He’ll get plenty of opportunities in Seattle with their offense but that stadium will play games with his field goals.

Interesting signing, but wanted to post an update to the earlier story.

Broncos make offer to Mare

March 27, 2008

Former New Orleans Saints kicker, Olindo Mare left the Mile High city impressed and with a contract in hand. An unsigned contract that is. Mare was in town for a 2-day visit with the Denver Broncos and the team pulled out all the stops in trying to replace Jason Elam. Mare is coming off a dislocated right hip but must of passed his physical if the Broncos were willing to put an offer on the table. What’s keeping Mare from signing a contract? Other winning teams are also interested.

“I wouldn’t say that there wasn’t enough to make me sign here because I had a great time. I loved it and all that. But obviously when you have options, it’s good to explore them all . . . ,” Mare said. “I’m lucky that the teams are interested are pretty much wining programs and on their way to the playoffs. That’s a big part of what I want to be a part of right now.” After leaving Denver today, he boarded a plane to visit the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle is currently trying to replace their own star kicker, Josh Brown. The Saints whom he played for in 2007 are still very much in the mix as well.

When talking about his visit to Denver, Mare said, “I know the goal for them was for me not to leave here … But this is my first visit. My goal is not to leave here, either, but I’m going to give Seattle a shot. They’ve been really positive and interested and we’ll see how it goes.” While Mare, is willing to give other teams a shot, he does want to get this done and over with soon.

Can we blame him? He’s coming off the hip surgery and needs to get in a rehab and strengthening program with an actual NFL team. Mare is already running sprints and kicking. “I don’t want to drag this thing out any longer. I want to get this thing resolved. I want to get on a team. I want to get into a program, part of a workout thing, and get a place to kick,” he said. “I’ve been kicking on my own down at a high school and lifting at a regular gym. That’s the first time I’ve had to do that.”

I think he’ll end up in Denver, with his powerful leg and the thin air in Colorado it should be a great fit. He led the league in touchbacks back in the 2006 and could easily do that again in that stadium.

Eagles continue shopping Lito

March 4, 2008

The Philadelphia Eagles continue to shop Pro-Bowl corner Lito Sheppard, but have not yet found a deal to their liking. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, a league source has said the Eagles have been receiving offers and most of those include both draft picks and players. The same league source also said something I said only a few days ago, FORGET THE IDEA of Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. “They’re not going to trade him,” the source said, which is also what GM Rod Graves said at the scouting combine.

I can’t blame the Eagles one bit for taking their time in making a deal. Trading Lito is not a necessity, so they can wait till they get an offer that blows their socks off. A combination of high draft picks, or maybe mid-draft picks with solid young players would be a great deal. If they don’t trade him so what, they’ll just have two really good corners, and then Sheldon Brown playing the nickel corner, one great trio there.

In other news, the Eagles are still looking for a wide receiver, and the biggest name on their radar is former Denver Broncos player Javon Walker. The team wanted him in 2006 before the Packers dealt him to Denver.

Seattle Hackett heads to free agency.

February 25, 2008

Looks like there is no doubt that Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DJ Hackett becomes an unrestricted free agent Friday. And its pretty likely that he won’t be playing in Seattle next season. Hackett’s agent Kevin Robinson and Seahawks GM Tim Ruskell had a meeting recently at the NFL Scouting Combine which didn’t go to well. Robinson left that meeting pretty discouraged about the lack of commitment the team has to their former 5th round draft pick.

“We are going to test the market,” Robinson said. “I won’t rule out Seattle as a destination but we are going to test the market and see what’s out there.” So what teams could have interest in Hackett? Hackett has played his entire career in the West Coast offense, so you’d have to think a west coast styled team would suit him best. That would be the Washington Redskins, Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans, Denver Broncos, and maybe even the wide receiver starved Philadelphia Eagles.

The main concern surrounding Hackett will be his health. He only played in 6 games last season due to multiple high ankle sprains then missing the second half of the season due to a knee injury. If he can prove to teams he’s healthy he can be a VERY valuable commodity as he did have over 30 catches in just 6 games this season.
