Injuries: Young and done
May 1, 2008
Injuries have stricken a few of the game’s young players that have bright futures. Colorado Rockies Troy Tulowitzki and New York Yankees Philip Hughes will be seeing extended time on the disabled list. Lets look at those injuries.
Tulowitzki is currently suffering from a torn tendon in his left quadricep muscle. The Rockies don’t expect to get the shortstop back till the All-Star break. What’s not good is, he could miss longer. “With the help of God he will be back in two months,” agent Paul Cohen told the Rocky Mountain News. “Maybe by the weekend or early next week we will have a better idea of how long this will be.” Not a good sign when they say “with the help of god”. At the moment, doctors think surgery will not be necessary, but yet again will not have a complete timetabl till the inflammation in the area goes down.
Who will be replacing, Tulo at short? None other then Clint Barmes. Barmes burst on to the scene in the 2005 season, in a big way with his bat but hasn’t done much offensively since. He previously started at short in the 05 and 06 seasons. If he does well, he might be able to get the second base job when Tulowitzki returns.
Now, the Yankees Philip Hughes. Its sad to say, but his current injury might be the best thing for him and his development. Hughes actually is suffering from a stress fracture in his rib cage, NOT a strained oblique. He won’t be able to throw a ball for 4-6 weeks, after that he can begin throwing and then obviously rehab. After missing so much time, he’ll need almost a month in the minors just to get his pitch count back up to where it needs to be. Darrell Rasner will take his place in the rotation, initially.
Now to Hughes and his problems. Could this have been the reason for his decreased velocity? It’s possible but probably not likely, I don’t think he’d be able to hide an injury like this for this long. This could be a huge plus for his confidence thou, he’ll get to step away from baseball now for a few weeks. Then come back and face minor league hitters, most likely in the AA-Eastern League. He can dominate the guys there, gain the confidence and then again remember what made him the pitcher the Yankees thought they were keeping this off-season. THEN, come up to the majors and pitch that way after rediscovering his form.
Braves rotation changes
April 5, 2008
A rain out changed the Atlanta Braves rotation for the weekend but injuries have went an changed them again. The Braves initial plans were for John Smoltz to come of the DL and start Sundays finale verse the New York Mets. After Fridays rain out the team said they would keep the rotation in tact and not make any changes. That means Tom Glavine would start Sunday, with Smoltz pushed back to Monday.
Well that’s changed again. The team has decided its best for John Smoltz and his cranky shoulder to start in the warmer weather of Atlanta then in Colorado. So we’re now back to John Smoltz pitching Sunday against the Mets. The loser in the deal, Tom Glavine. He’ll now start Sunday in the colder weather against the Colorado Rockies.
Smart move on the Braves part, no idea why they made that announcement of keeping their rotation in tact. Maybe they were playing head games with the Mets and Johan Santana.

Giles no show in Vegas
April 1, 2008
After a whole off-season of talk about Marcus Giles becoming a Los Angeles Dodgers, it isn’t happening. Giles was recently released by the Colorado Rockies after refusing a minor league assignment. The Dodgers, who almost traded for him agreed to a minor league deal with the third baseman earlier today. The plan was for Giles to spend 10 days at AAA-Las Vegas to reacquaint himself with third base and get some more at-bats, then come up to the majors and split time with Rookie Blake DeWitt at third. So what happened?
Giles was in his car driving from his home in San Diego on his way to Las Vegas, when he changed his mind. He turned his car around and went home. He literally just decided I’m not going I don’t feel like it. Supposedly now he doesn’t have the desire to play anymore and might retire.
For the Dodgers, this is absolutely the worst case scenario for them. They’re already down 3 third baseman and passed up other options thinking Giles was a lock. Alex Cintron was one of interest that they could of had, but he signed with the Baltimore Orioles yesterday.

Mets roster moves
March 27, 2008
The New York Mets made a couple roster moves today, the surprising one is the placing of 2B Ruben Gotay on waivers. Gotay just recently rejoined the lineup after suffering a sprained ankle during camp. Unfortunately for him, Fernando Tatis has the front offices support for the final role on the bench. This morning it actually looked like the Mets may place Gotay on the disabled list just to keep him on the roster. Reason being, he’s out of options and would have to clear waivers to be sent to AAA. I’m sure there are quite a few teams who would love to have Gotay as their 5th outfielder.
Well come afternoon, Gotay was informed that he had been placed on waivers. If he clears waivers, the Mets can then attempt to resign him to a minor league deal. Did all of this cause friction between the Mets and Gotay? You bet your ass it did. Gotay is not happy at all about the situation. “I thought I did a good job last year,” Gotay said. “I didn’t think I deserved this.” According to Newsday, Gotay sat in his locker talking on the phone with tears in his eyes after packing up. I don’t expect to see him back with the Mets for a while, he’ll be looking elsewhere.
The other move involved Rule 5 draft pick, Steven Register. The Mets liked the kid, they just don’t have the room on their major league roster for him right now which meant off to the waiver wire he goes. Being a Rule 5 guy, if he clears waivers the Mets have to offer him back to the Colorado Rockies. If the Rockies want him back, they’ll send $25,000 to Mets. Apparently, the Mets want to keep the kid and will now talk trade with Colorado.
Marcus Giles trade update
March 25, 2008
A trade between the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers for Marcus Giles is looking less likely. Even with the team contemplating putting both Jeff Kent and Nomar Garciaparra on the disabled list, the trade interest from the Dodgers is minimal. Giles agent, Joe Blick, said that the two teams have had conversations but a deal seems unlikely. Giles is still hopeful thou that something can be worked out.
The Dodgers seem pretty intent on filling any holes on their team from within. If i was the Dodgers, I’d fore go a trade and wait for Giles to hit the free agent market. Giles has been pretty insistent that he will not accept a Triple-A assignment if it was offered by the Rockies. If the Rockies attempt to demote Giles, and he rejects he’s sure to hit the free agent market. Why should the Dodgers give up a young minor leaguer for Giles (even if its a low ball player), when they can get him for a signed check instead. Keep your minor leaguers, and just pay the guy. Why give up a player and pay him.
But yea like the headline says, just a trade update. Not much more brewing on this front.
Rockies looking to move Giles
March 23, 2008
The Colorado Rockies are looking to move second baseman Marcus Giles before the season starts. At the start of camp it was known Giles was a pretty big long shot to win the starting job, so now that the team is looking to move him its all but certain he won’t be starting. Rookie Jayson Nix should be the starter for the team. So what team could the Rockies be sending Giles to?
The Los Angeles Dodgers have a need at second, as Jeff Kent and Nomar Garciaparra as both are experiencing health problems. Both players also might have brief stints on the disabled list to start the season. Giles would make sense as he could be a decent stop gap solution, then a decent back-up. Asked about the trade talk, Giles said, “That’s what I’m hearing.”
