Benson on the move

June 27, 2008

Kris BensonDespite the recent tailspin of the Philadelphia Phillies there could be some good news on the horizon. The long awaited appearance at Citizens Bank Park of Kris Benson is drawing closer. The right handed pitcher has been promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley (Hey maybe the Iron Pigs will finally win a game). Benson has already had two rehab starts for Single-A Clearwater. Benson is on the move, but is that a good thing? Read more

Benson pitching again

June 15, 2008

Just about two weeks after being scratched from a minor league start, Kris Benson is back on the mound. The Philadelphia Phillies pitcher threw 3 innings in a minor league intrasquad game on Saturday. His fastball was said to be in the 86 to 89 mph range, right about where he usually is. No word on what off-speed pitches if any were included. Regardless, this is a positive step forward as it was beginning to look like Benson would not see the big leagues again this season. Still, he’s quite a few weeks from even getting a call to the big league roster.

More setbacks for Benson

June 2, 2008

Kris BensonIt’s looking more and more likely that Kris Benson will make a contribution to the Philadelphia Phillies. In actuality, it’s looking more doubtful that he’ll ever pitch for the team. Benson was supposed to make his first start for Single-A Clearwater tonight, but was scratched from that start. He’s again suffering from tightness and soreness in his right biceps, and for some reason Assistant General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr thinks it’s not the same as the tendinitis he had in spring training. I don’t know sounds similar to me. Read more

Phillies consider extensions

May 12, 2008

Philadelphia PhilliesThe Philadelphia Phillies have preferred to avoid contract negotiations in the season for quite some time now. A lot of this can be directly related to General Manger Pat Gillick, he prefers to avoid the talks as he feels it could become a distraction to the player and team as a whole. Most Phillies fans will tell you thats also a reason why Aaron Rowand isn’t roaming center field at the bank this year. The Phillies currently have multiple contracts running out at the end of this year thou, mainly Pat Burrell and Brad Lidge. So what’s changed? Read more

Phillies prospect’s career in jeopardy

May 6, 2008

Philadelphia Phillies’ pitcher Scott Mathieson’s career may be over before it fully gets started. The 24-year old prospect is contemplating a second Tommy John surgery. In the 2006 season, Mathieson made his debut at Citizens Bank Park and just like that Phillies fans had high hopes like Harry Kalas would say. His numbers weren’t outstanding, actually not even that good, but he had moments where the fans thought he could be something special. But now, his career is in jeopardy.

In his 9th major league start of that 2006 season, he went down with an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. The surgery was performed on Sept 29th, 2006, which should put him on target for a mid-2008 return. Well we’re in the month of May now and he’s no where close to returning. In late March, Mathieson was finally able to begin throwing off a mound but is already experiencing discomfort in the elbow.

One would think, hey you haven’t thrown off a mound in over a year of course you’re going to be sore. But, with surgery already being an option, the doctors and Scott may have already written off the thought of general soreness. If Mathieson does have the second surgery, he’d miss the rest of this year, and the entire 2009 season. That would mean the earliest he would pitch at the Bank again, would be 2010 when he’d be 26-years old. Still young, but also almost 3.5 to 4 years without pitching in a big league game.

Most Phillies fans that I know, have eagerly been waiting for this kid to return this season. They feel he could be a shot in the arm and help stabilize the back-end of the rotation, while being valuable insurance for once Adam Eaton implodes. Unfortunately for those fans, if Mathieson does undergo this second Tommy John surgery, a return to Philadelphia at any point in is pretty unlikely. His career would be pretty much over and he’ll have to purchase tickets like the rest of.

Rollins return delayed.

May 1, 2008

Unfortunately for the Philadelphia Phillies and their fans, the return of Jimmy Rollins will most likely be delayed. Many were expecting JRoll to rejoin the team in Arizona, on May 5th his first day of eligibility after being on the disabled list. He experienced a setback thou and his minor league rehab assignment has been pushed back, indefinitely.

Rollins feels much better but still experiences some soreness in his sprained ankle while running the bases. “Once I’m able to do that, I’ll be able to play,” the shortstop said. Now I don’t think he’ll actually be out for an indefinite period, it will probably be more like 3-4 more days before they try to schedule a rehab assignment. It’s definitely something to watch thou as ankles can be tricky and you don’t want to risk doing severe damage to it. “Don’t treat it right and I’ve got a bad ankle for the rest of my career, too,” he said. “That’s not good. When I’m ready, I’ll be up on that lineup board.”

Rollins on the mend

April 27, 2008

Philadelphia Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins is getting much closer to 100 percent and should be able to begin his rehab assignment soon. Rollins, currently on the disabled list, with a sprained ankle took batting AND fielding practice yesterday in Clearwater, Florida. Rollins told the Philadelphia Inquirer he was much improved.

There is no official date for a rehab assignment but he is able to come of the DL on May 5th when the team visits the Arizona Diamondbacks. My guess would probably be Wednesday or Thursday, and play through the weekend for one of the minor league affiliates.

Other Phillies injury notes. Chris Snelling, also on the DL, with knee inflammation had an MRI yesterday. He’ll remain in Philadelphia and receive care from trainer Scott Sheridan during the home stand. Scott Mathieson, ulnar nerve transposition, will visit DR James Andrews in Alabama for a third opinion on his ailing right elbow.
