Updating oft-injured pitchers

May 7, 2008

Don’t know why I am wasting time on these two pitchers, but here are some injury updates for the New York Mets Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez and St. Louis Cardinals Mark Mulder. Mulder has had a setback in his rehab assignments, while Hernandez has finally taken the boot off.

Lets start off with El Duque. Hernandez has finally decided to take the protective boot off of his ailing right foot. Mets’ Assistant GM John Ricco has said that he no longer has any of the tenderness in the tendon, that required him to wear the boot. Don’t get your hopes up thou Mets fan, actually I doubt you did. Hernandez is still a long way from returning. All he’s been medically cleared to do is light throwing and jogging. A possible problem thou, that pesky bunion still remains. This guy’s such a joke, just go and retire already.

Now Mark Mulder. The Cardinals left hander was shutdown again, this time for a mild rotator cuff strain. Doctors have prescribed 7 to 10 days of rest, and then a re-evaluation. Mulder was scheduled to have one more rehab start, before his 30-day rehab window expired on the 14th. At that point, the Cardinals would have had to decide to promote, or cut. This setback pushes that decision back.

Mulder’s agent Gregg Clifton refuses to use the word setback thou. “The bottomline is this is not a setback whatsoever,” Clifton said. “It’s a hiatus for a week, and then after he’s re-evaluated he’ll be back out there. … Everyone feels a brief rest period will allow him to come back (feeling stronger).” In my opinion, if this wasn’t a setback then he’d make that start and THEN the Cardinals would just give him a brief rest before calling him up.

Mulder has been horrendous in his rehab stint, making 5 starts with a 6.66 era giving up 33 hits in 25 and 2/3 innings. He’s currently rehabbing rotator cuff and labrum surgery he had in September to repair the shoulder from the previous rotator cuff surgery.

Mets rotation woes continue

April 15, 2008

No surprise here, New York Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez had his return to the bigs pushed back even longer. The initial prognosis of 4-6 weeks for a mild strain of a hamstring is turning out to be pretty bad. The new timetable calls for late may - early June. which would mean 6 - 10 weeks, pretty long for a strain I would think. “We’re definitely going to be more conservative with him,” Minaya told The Post. “With hamstrings, you just never know. We’ve got to be careful.”

Personally, I think they’re babying Pedro. They realized they let him start pitching to early in the season and that his frail body can no longer hold up over a full 30+ start season. He hasn’t had 30 starts since the 2005 season, and even before that struggled to stay healthy for a whole year.

Mets fans must realize now how much of a joke it was to think him and Johan would be one of the best 1-2 in baseballs over the course of a season. Pedro can still be pretty electric in spurts but he’s not someone you can count on day in and day out. After this season, he should really consider retirement but its highly unlikely since his stuff is still THAT good at times. But come on Mets fans, you said you’d win the division over the Phillies and Braves because of your rotation, do you really still believe that to be the case? Your rotation is what it was before the season, very questionable at best.

Mets expected to sign Vargas

April 9, 2008

The New York Mets look like they may have begun to address the injury problems that are already striking their starting rotation. The team is on the verge of signing free-agent Claudio Vargas to a AAA minor league deal. According to Vargas agent, Bean Stringfellow, there were four teams showing interest in him and that the Mets are the favorite. I’m not sure how believable that statement actually is thou.

The Mets need some rotation help pretty bad. I was never sold on their rotation being a strength like many others said it was. Pedro Martinez is already out for an extended period of time and now Orlando Hernandez will have his right foot in a boot for at least two weeks. The Mets are so desperate now that Mike Pelfrey has become the 4th starter, with Nelson Figueroa rounding out the five.

If Vargas is officially signed, he should make a few starts at AAA to get himself into big league shape and stretch his arm out. Other options for the Mets could come from free agency or the minor leagues. Free agent wise you still have David Wells and Jeff Weaver on the market, not to intriguing, I know. Internally, they could call up Tony Armas Jr, Brian Stokes or Adam Bostick. Jason Vargas, no relation, was another option but he’s already out for at least three months after undergoing hip surgery.

Regardless, the Mets are already in trouble and in desperation mode for pitching. At least, they have a stud in Johan Santana that will help avoid any prolonged losing streaks. While also having two pitchers in Oliver Perez and John Maine who will each win at least 13 games a piece.
