Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman celebrated his first save of 2012 and new closing role (??) by getting arrested early Monday Morning. WLWT News 5 reports that Chapman was arrested for speeding and driving with a suspended license.

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman was arrested after he was caught driving 93 mph in Grove City early Monday, police said.

Police said Chapman, 24, was pulled over after he was recorded speeding in a black 2010 Mercedes S63 on Interstate 71 North near Interstate 270 about 12:42 a.m. Monday.

Chapman was arrested after the officer discovered he had a suspended Kentucky driver’s license, according to a police report.(WLWT News 5)

There will be plenty of jokes now tying Chapman’s fastball velocity to his speeding. I’m sure many of them will suck so I won’t even attempt to make one.

Chapman is due in court on June 6th oh and he is out on bond.

The Texas Rangers are back to searching for starting pitcher after the unsettling news about Neftali Feliz. Feliz was attempting to convert from a closer to a starter and now has an elbow injury, what a shock right. Luckily for Feliz it’s just a sprained UCL not a torn one, so no surgery is required but he will be shut down for a while. The team isn’t counting on him till after the All-Star break which leads them to free agent Roy Oswalt.

General manager Jon Daniels said the Rangers will consider signing pitcher Roy Oswalt in the wake of Neftali Feliz’s elbow injury.

“Everything is on the table,” Daniels said Monday. (T.R. Sullivan – MLBlogs)

Oswalt reportedly wants to sign with someone soon. He recently threw for the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies but most importantly threw for the Rangers on Friday. With Texas now in need of a starter things could progress very quickly.

The Rangers will go with Scott Feldman as Neftali’s replacement on Wednesday, after that who knows. Feldman isn’t a guy you want starting long term so I like Oswalt’s chances here of finding a home.

Now if Dr. Andrews gives a negative report on Vance Worley’s elbow then Oswalt is going to have options himself.

Should Philadelphia fans start to worry? Young ace in the making Vance Worley visited with Dr. James Andrews today in Florida. Normally it’s not a good thing when pitchers visit him but the team is labeling this as a precautionary visit. Worley was initially diagnosed with a bone chip in his right elbow that will require surgery. The visit itself is because the team isn’t sure if it’s the reason for his inflammation.

Vance Worley requested a second opinion on his sore right elbow, so he saw noted orthopedist James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., on Monday.

As reported in Monday’s Inquirer, Worley has a small bone chip in his right elbow.

“He has a small body embedded in the lining of his joint,” Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “We don’t think it’s the reason why he had inflammation, but it’s possible. This is something that’s not very uncommon. But it could be the cause of some of the inflammation. We haven’t heard from Andrews.” (Matt Gelb – Philly.com)

If the bone chip is the reason for inflammation then things are all good. He’ll resume his throwing and be back with the team shortly. If Dr. Andrews says something different then who knows as of this post the team still hasn’t heard back from the doc.

The next few nights are going to be interesting at Citizens Bank Park as the Washington Nationals visit the Philadelphia Phillies. In case you forgot the last time these two teams met, Bryce Harper was intentionally hit by a pitch from Cole Hamels. A pitch that was meant to welcome him to the big leagues which Harper responded to by stealing home. That sequence probably made Phillies fans hate him more then they ever have and now has him wondering if he’ll get J.D. type Drew treatment.

(H/T to The 700 Level for the video)

So Harper wants boos from Philly fans just not the batteries. I’m quite sure he’ll get the boos, those boos might be the loudest we’ve heard up to this point in the season.

What impresses me is that someone batting only .244 with two homers in 78 at-bats can get that type of reaction. I guess that just goes with being the next big thing and having the ego where you really believe you are that.

A couple days ago Paul Daugherty of Cincinnati.com wrote a piece wondering if Kevin Youkilis would be a good fit for the Cincinnati Reds. He talks about how the Boston Red Sox third baseman is a native of the city could be the grinding power bat that the team needs. Well today John Fay also of Cincinnati.com has a quote from General Manager Walt Jocketty that killed any chance of this getting off the ground, well for now.

The Reds are not seeking outside help at third base with Scott Rolen on the disabled list.

“No, because Scott’s not going to be out that long,” Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. “The other thing is I think this is a good opportunity for (Todd) Frazier. It give him an opportunity to play and see what he can do.”

The Reds have had no discussions with the Boston Red Sox, Jocketty said. That shoots down the rumors that the Reds are interested in trading for Kevin Youkilis. (John Fay – Cincinnati.com)

Fay does add that things could change if Rolen would be on the disabled list longer then expected and Frazier struggles.

Right now Frazier doesn’t look to bad. In 2012 he’s batting .270 with two doubles, two triples, a homer and three runs batted in over 37 at-bats. The one negative is his tendency to strikeout, he’s struck out 11 times already.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins announced today that Frank Francisco will remain the teams closer despite his horrendous start. While I don’t think this is their best move with them being only 2.5 games out of first but hey I don’t make the big bucks to make these decisions.

@matthewcerrone: #Mets fans, Terry says Frank Francisco is still the team’s best option at closer and he will continue in that role.

Remember yesterday Collins refused to make a statement about the teams closer role after Francisco’s loss in which he gave up three runs without recording an out. Yes he got ejected but he wasn’t going to last much longer. Terry refused to make a decision on the spot because of that I will give him credit.

“We’ll address it,” Collins said. “I have eight options,” he replied, when asked if he has other options in the bullpen to be his closer in place of Francisco. “But, I’m not going to address that right now, when emotions are running high. (Mets Blog)”

Even though I give him credit for sleeping on his decision I again have to say I think it was the wrong decision. I think it’s going to be a decision that costs the Mets in the long run.

There’s a report out there that Cole Hamels wants a seven year contract from the Philadelphia Phillies. This information comes from Howard Eskin of NBC Philadelphia. If this is indeed the case Phillies fans better enjoy the last starts in a Phillies uniform from Mr. Hamels.

@howardeskin: Just reported on Sports Final @NBCPhiladelphia that I’m told cole hamels agent has told Phillies they r looking for “7″ year deal.

The Phillies are known for not giving out long contracts to pitchers. We were all shocked when they gave Cliff Lee a five year deal so why should we expect them to give Cole seven years? He’s a damn good pitcher but you can’t expect the Phillies to go that length to appease the fans especially at the corresponding dollar figure, which should be around $20 million.

If the Phillies don’t intend to meet his demands it’s time to start seeing what teams like the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and others may be willing to give up via trade.

A trade is not what we want to see as fans but the bottom line is if the Phillies won’t give Cole seven years, someone will. So might as well get something in return especially if they don’t get themselves into contention soon.

For years now fans of the New York Mets have been screaming for the return of Banner Day. Many of you probably just went what? Banner Day, what’s that? At Shea Stadium the Mets had a longstanding tradition that was called Banner Day. At the end of the game fans would come in through the center field wall and walk down the field to the third base line where judges would pick the best banner. Well in 2012 that tradition returns on May 27th as the Mets celebrate their 50th anniversary.

As part of the 50th anniversary of the Mets, the team this year is bringing back banner day, which was last held in 1996. Dwight Gooden and Rusty Staub (both on the team in 1984) as well as the WFAN broadcasters Howie Rose and Evan Roberts will be judges for the event, which will be held on Sunday, May 27, before the Mets play the Padres. (New York Times)

The process of judging has changed to reflect the times. The Mets will involve social media in choosing the winners. On the day of the even the judges will pick three finalists and instead of them choosing the winners the fans will pick vote via text, Twitter or Facebook. The winner will receive a trip to next years Spring Training.

So Mets fans rejoice the day you’ve all wanted to return is back, so get your thinking caps on! You can get more info at the Mets website.

After all the speculation about where David Wright could wind up could he actually be staying in the Big Apple? Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal says that exact thing could happen as the New York Mets are “quietly” preparing an offer. Personally this doesn’t surprise me with the amazing start he’s had to the 2012 season.

The team is quietly preparing to offer third baseman David Wright a long-term contract extension at some point later this year—perhaps as soon as this summer—according to a baseball official briefed on the Mets’ thinking.

The Mets hold a $16 million option to retain Wright for 2013, so there is no urgency for them to begin discussing an extension with his representatives. But they are likely to do so before next winter, the official said, because if they cannot reach an agreement, the Mets would have to consider trading him in the offseason. (Wall Street Journal)

The good news for fans is that they really do sound serious about trying to keep David. General Manager Sandy Alderson even said, “I certainly do not foresee, under any circumstances, David being a topic of discussion at the trade deadline.”

His main reasons are:

Wright sounds genuine in his desire to stay in New York, not like Jose Reyes who just wanted the biggest paycheck he could get.

With the option year the team has more then enough time to negotiate and if they get it done now could get a discount (unlikely but could).

And finally that Wright is well, the face of the franchise.

I’m not sure if Wright will stay in New York but if he keeps playing this way I don’t see how the Mets could let him walk. For the fans sake hopefully he does stay.

I’m no baseball scout. I’m no beat writer for a professional team. I’m just a diehard baseball fan who writes about what I find interesting. What I find interesting is how Andy Pettitte and people around the New York Yankees say he’s ready to help the team? Why, because his arm is stretched out. The fan in me says that’s crazy thought when you look at the numbers he’s put up. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports kind of agrees that’s he not ready but for a different reason.

Left-hander Andy Pettitte does not look close to ready, according to a rival scout who watched him pitch Sunday at Triple A.

Pettitte allowed five runs (three earned) in five innings against the Red Sox’s Pawtucket affiliate. The scout said that Pettitte threw 86 to 88 mph, but that his stuff lacked crispness and that he likely will need several more starts at Triple A before he is ready to pitch in the majors. (Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports)

In my opinion, a few more starts is the perfect thing for Andy and the Yankees. The problem is Andy wants to help his team so bad while the Yankees well, need the help that bad. Rushing Andy back into competition would be the worst thing for all sides involved.

Some say Andy just needs Spring Training which is what he just went through. I call bullshit. The guy hasn’t pitched since 2010 he needs some more time after not playing in 2011. There’s a reason he’s struggling and his pitches aren’t crisp yet, he hasn’t thrown in over a year!!

Sorry Yankees fans throwing with your kids and casual workouts is not the same as competitive pitching. If he has control but not the crispness on his pitches to get Double-A and Triple-A hitters out he’ll get completely destroyed in the Major Leagues. Yes, he’s crafty and a veteran fighter but what’s that doing for him right now?

I plead with Brian Cashman to give him some more time. Fight the urge to call Andy up and hope history is revisited and give him the amount of time he needs. Pettitte’s a proud guy and will fight it but it’s time to throw the hammer down. You’re not in the big leagues till you look like a guy who can get Major League hitters out.
