Cardinals experiencing a Carpenter delay
June 17, 2008
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris carpenter was shut down last week after experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired elbow. The pitcher visited Dr. James Andrews on Monday, the same doctor who performed his Tommy John surgery. There was good and bad news from this visit. The bad news well there wasn’t much just that he’s experiencing normal pain in the recovery just at a later stage then most people. The good, well the good is pretty much the same as the bad. How’s that so? Well it means that its normal pain associated with the surgery and he won’t need to have more. Read more
Pujols injury update
June 12, 2008
If you could take any good news out of an injury, the St. Louis Cardinals and Albert Pujols have. Pujols is currently on the disabled list with a strained calf, the team initially feared the worst thou a tear. After undergoing an MRI Wednesday, team medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta diagnosed Albert with a mild strain, officially a Grade I-II strain. This would mean some severe stretching of the muscle but not a complete tear. The Cardinals are in the midst of a playoff race, so the real question is how long will he be out? Read more
Another Mulder shut down
May 20, 2008
What a surprise!! St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Mark Mulder has been shut down during his rehab again. A little less then two weeks ago we talked about Mulder being shut down due to a rotator cuff strain. At that time, Mulder was told to shut it down for 7-10 days and he would then be reevaluated after that period. Well, Mulder did return after that period, threw 3 bullpen sessions and has now been shut down again for 10 to 14 more days. That decision comes the day before he was scheduled to make a rehab start for AAA-Memphis. Read more
Updating oft-injured pitchers
May 7, 2008
Don’t know why I am wasting time on these two pitchers, but here are some injury updates for the New York Mets Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez and St. Louis Cardinals Mark Mulder. Mulder has had a setback in his rehab assignments, while Hernandez has finally taken the boot off.
Lets start off with El Duque. Hernandez has finally decided to take the protective boot off of his ailing right foot. Mets’ Assistant GM John Ricco has said that he no longer has any of the tenderness in the tendon, that required him to wear the boot. Don’t get your hopes up thou Mets fan, actually I doubt you did. Hernandez is still a long way from returning. All he’s been medically cleared to do is light throwing and jogging. A possible problem thou, that pesky bunion still remains. This guy’s such a joke, just go and retire already.
Now Mark Mulder. The Cardinals left hander was shutdown again, this time for a mild rotator cuff strain. Doctors have prescribed 7 to 10 days of rest, and then a re-evaluation. Mulder was scheduled to have one more rehab start, before his 30-day rehab window expired on the 14th. At that point, the Cardinals would have had to decide to promote, or cut. This setback pushes that decision back.
Mulder’s agent Gregg Clifton refuses to use the word setback thou. “The bottomline is this is not a setback whatsoever,” Clifton said. “It’s a hiatus for a week, and then after he’s re-evaluated he’ll be back out there. … Everyone feels a brief rest period will allow him to come back (feeling stronger).” In my opinion, if this wasn’t a setback then he’d make that start and THEN the Cardinals would just give him a brief rest before calling him up.
Mulder has been horrendous in his rehab stint, making 5 starts with a 6.66 era giving up 33 hits in 25 and 2/3 innings. He’s currently rehabbing rotator cuff and labrum surgery he had in September to repair the shoulder from the previous rotator cuff surgery.
Rolen happy with change
March 4, 2008
New Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Scott Rolen is enjoying the change of scenery this spring. Rolen was acquired by the Blue Jays in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, in a deal that swapped starting the third baseman for both teams. So Rolen’s happy? That might be a first. The main problem Rolen had last seasonw as his relationship with manager Tony LaRussa, which is also a topic he still doesn’t like to talk about. “We’re different people with different morals,” Rolen said. “You can write that if you want. I don’t care. That’s all right. That’s as politically correct as I can say it, I guess.”
The Blue Jays to are excited about having Rolen on their team. Toronto GM J.P. Riccardi is shocked on how to smart baseball minds like Rolen and LaRussa could have so many problems. “Just watching him play, I don’t know how you can’t appreciate that,” Ricciardi said. “From our end, we appreciate it. I wasn’t there, so I don’t know the dynamics of that relationship with Tony. But from our end, we don’t think he’ll have any problems that way.” The team loves his “workmanlike style” and wants him to just go out and be himself this year, and well pretty much enjoy the game.
“It’s a fresh start,” Rolen said. “I was in a spot, obviously, where I needed to put the competition back on the field where it belonged, and, again, not outside the lines.” After problems in Philadelphia and St. Louis lets see how long this lasts, but hey Toronto enjoy it while you got it!
here’s an article in the NY Times which goes into much more detail.
Mets brass torn on Lohse
February 29, 2008
The New York Mets are still toying around with the idea of Kyle Lohse, but upper management is quite divided on if they should go that route or not. According to Ken Rosenthal’s latest article there are pretty much two different takes on Lohse.
- Some believe that Lohse could be a valuable commodity as insurance for the oft injured, oft ineffective Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez.
- Others in the organization feel he’d be a waste after signing Johan Santana. With Santana they have their five lined up.
- And then others also feel he has no value as a 6th starter, as the team already has Mike Pelfrey penciled into that role
There are also a couple teams still interested in Lohse. Those would be the Baltimore Orioles and the St Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals have been pursuing him but some sources have told Rosenthal that the team is not interested. Now the Orioles seem to be very interested but only at a reasonable rate.
I can’t see him signing before the middle of spring training at the earliest. He’s not moving from his contract demands and you know what no team is rightfully willing to pay it.

Arrest warrants issued for Spiezio.
February 27, 2008
So an arrest warrant as been issued for St Louis Cardinals Scott Spiezio. The warrant contains six charges all coming from a car accident in late December 2007. The charges include driving under the influence, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or more, hit and run, aggravated assault, assault and battery. Spiezio did not play in today’s exhibition game but Cardinals spokesman Brian Bartow said it’s not due to the warrant and that the team was not aware of it.
Here are the details of the crash. Irvine, California police responded to a single-car crash in the midnight hour on Dec 30th. At the scene a 2004 BMW was found, this vehicle was registered to Spiezio. The vehicle had crashed into a curb and then a fence. There were also reports that the driver was seen running from the crash.
That’s not the end thou! Afterwards police talked to neighbors of Spiezio, one who said he was assaulted by Spiezio a short while later and a very short distance from the crash site. The neighbor claimed that Spiezio arrived home looking injured and disheveled, he then vomited in his condo and then assaulted the neighbor causing significant injuries.
Don’t have much spin on this regarding playing time yet, as there’s no reports coming from the Cards themselves. And Spiezio hasn’t turned himself in so no word on any type of trial dates or anything.
Stories like this get me pretty upset thou. One would think professional athletes and celebrities know better, they have all the money in the world and can easily have someone just drive them home. And what about this story makes me even more upset is this past summer the Cardinals dealt with the loss of Josh Hancock to drunk driving, and now Spiezio gets in his own DUI hit and run, after the two were very close friends. I swear a lot of these guys are just complete morons, its sad just so sad.
