Smoot – RGIII is a brat & Shanahan is a red lobster

It’s been one of hell of a day with former NFL players bashing their former teams. First you had Carl Banks ripping the New York Giants a new one for not having any pride. Now you’ve got Fred Smoot calling out Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan and star quarterback Robert Griffin III. Smoot was on 106.7 the Fan in D.C. today and just went absolutely off, the quotes that the Washington Post so graciously posted are quite funny.

First up we’ve got Smoot calling for a coaching change. In addition to that he gives Shanahan a new nickname.

“If you’re going to make a coaching change for the future, it’s time to make it now,” he said. “Robert Griffin III has been a Redskin now for one and a half years. If you’re gonna change his coach and you want a coach to grow with him like the Bradys and Belichicks and all the great pairs of quarterbacks and coaches, you have to do it now. And right now, I think the Red Lobster’s working his way outta here. I think Shanahan is working his way out of here.” (Washington Post)

I understand addressing some needs, but let’s be honest,” said Smoot. “There’s a rift in this relationship, this marriage between RGIII and Shanahan. Nobody wants to say it, but come on. Right now the doctor, the head coach and the quarterback do not see eye to eye. They do not get along. What happens when this all boils over? Then it’s too late. Fix it now. Now being a couple months from now. Do not break this team up now, let these coaches finish this year out. Understand who we can get and who we can’t get and bring the best coach in here. Preferably an offensive coach. I think an offensive coach would be great.

“It’s a problem that no one wants to talk about,” he continued. “RGIII and Shanahan don’t get along. They the couple that we invite to dinner and they always arguing. We know this couple don’t have a chance. It won’t be a year or two before they talking about divorce and it’s not gonna shock any of us.”(Washington Post)

He continues to talk about the Shanahan / RGIII relationship by talking about how about the two don’t get along and how it seems like neither respects the other.

“The Red Lobster and RGIII, they’re not compatible right now,” Smoot said, pretty much ensuring that nickname will stick. “And right now, you can’t have one without the other. I think one thing the Red Lobster has lost this locker room. I think him and RGIII, I don’t know if it’s a disrespect there, but they don’t respect each other like a coach and a quarterback should. And until you get a Cowher, a Gruden, not somebody that RG will bow down to, but he respects in a different way, I think we’re going to see the same back-and-forth arguing.”< (Washington Post)/blockquote>

For all of you thinking Smoot is just bashing Shanahan and defending the QB he’s not. He had some very choice words for the kid as well, going so far to call him a brat.

“It’s about time somebody be honest,” Smoot said. “Sometimes RGIII can be a brat, alright? Because I’m watching these other quarterbacks and I’m watching how they compose themselves and the things they do. With Luck and Wilson, and it’s a different vibe. Sometimes I’m starting to think that RGIII is really really buying into the attention. But I tell anybody this. The NFL will humble you. And I think he’s going through that humbling process right now as we speak.” (Washington Post)

Some of you may right this off as a former player just whining and complaining about the direction the team he loved is going but I disagree. There’s a very real problem in Washington and things are close to coming to a head and it will probably end with Shanahan losing his job.
