Royals sign Carlos Pena

The Kansas City Royals look to be falling out of the playoff race but are still somehow clinging on. They made a move last night that they hope can get them back in to the thick of things by signing Carlos Pena to a minor league deal. The Royals are set at first baseman and designated hitter so I’m not sure how big of a help he’ll actually be if he makes the team. If he does make the team he’ll be a late inning, left handed bat off the bench.

Royals general manager Dayton Moore said the signing was to provide an option for additional depth, possibly as a left-handed bat off the bench.

“He’s got a good track record and he’s a guy with terrific makeup,” Moore said.

The Royals are clinging to postseason hopes and Pena might help in the stretch run. Moore said the Royals will assess Pena, who hasn’t played since being released, at Omaha and see where it goes. Major League rosters can be expanded on Sept. 1. (MLB)
