Geno Smith starts Saturday, if healthy
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith will finally be getting a chance to start this week. Smith would have started game two but sprained his ankle kept him out of the game so the team hasn’t had a chance yet to see what the kid could do. If he’s healthy they’ll finally see what he has when they face the New York Giants. The team says its because of the ankle injury but I’m sure Mark Sanchez’s 13-23 for 169 yards, a touchdown and interception had something to do with it.
Geno Smith will start against the Giants, barring a setback with his ankle, the Daily News has learned. The Jets have extended its quarterback competition through the third preseason game, and Smith only has to be healthy to start his first NFL game, a proposition that looks increasingly likely after he moved well in practice on Monday.
The move makes sense: Mark Sanchez started the team’s first two games and Smith didn’t play in the second game, so the team has hardly gotten a look at their second-round quarterback in the preseason. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg admitted the team hardly was able to get an evaluation on Smith in the team’s opener in which he played 14 snaps before hurting his ankle.
Sanchez said Saturday he wasn’t surprised to learn that the quarterback competition had been extended through the third game after Smith missed the Jaguars game.(New York Daily News)
