Baltimore Orioles closer Jim Johnson has been struggling as of late, blowing his last two save opportunities. He’s now blown eight saves this year while saving 39 games. This obviously got people wondering if newly acquired Francisco Rodriguez might see some save opportunities if Johnson’s struggles continue. Well, manager Buck Showalter has already shot down those rumors.
A day after Jim Johnson blew his eighth save of the season in the Orioles’ 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, manager Buck Showalter is still standing by his closer.
Asked today whether Francisco Rodriguez could get some save opportunities down the stretch, Showalter definitively said, “I don’t foresee that.” (Baltimore Sun)
K-Rod was having a great season in Milwaukee posting an ERA of 1.09 over 25 appearances with ten saves. It was clear though when the Orioles traded for him that he’d be a setup man and I guess Buck is going to stick by that, no matter what.
I think that could still change though if Johnson keeps struggling and costing the Orioles valuable games in the Wild Card race.
