Rockets won’t trade Asik

Houston Rockets center Omer Asik hasn’t been a happy camper since the team acquired Dwight Howard. With Dwight on the roster, Asik obviously gets bumped from the starting lineup as both are true centers. Asik requested a trade and at the moment the Rockets don’t plan on obliging.

Houston Rockets center Omer Asik has formally asked the team to trade him in the wake of the team landing Dwight Howard in free agency. But the Rockets have no plans to grant Asik’s wish, sources told

Asik has threatened to leave the Rockets in free agency if he’s not traded, sources said. However, Houston has him under contract for two more years at a total of $20 million. (ESPN)

One can understand his displeasure as he did average 10.1 points and 11.7 rebounds per game but let’s be real, he’s not Dwight Howard. So I can understand the Rockets move and from a business stand point I’m sure he does. From a personal view though he knows he can start and he’s proven he’s one of the better centers in the league. Unfortunately for him you just don’t give away top centers.

“With Omer, he had a great year for us last year and really became one of the top centers in the league,” coach Kevin McHale said. “It’s just when you have an opportunity to get Dwight, it’s hard not to. I’m sure Omer right now is a little down in the dumps, but we’ll pick him up.”(ESPN)

What I did find interesting in the ESPN article is that McHale referenced the Rockets from the 80’s and how they would play Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson at the same time. I’ve even thought back to the San Antonio Spurs with Tim Duncan and David Robinson.

Having two very good big men on the court can be beneficial but in today’s NBA where the big center isn’t need anymore it’s a lot tougher to run a lineup like that.

“You do play two bigs,” McHale said. “You have to get spacing and you have to make sure your small guys have got to make sure they keep the court spaced.” (ESPN)

If a trade were to happen I’d expect it closer to training camp or late in the season. The Rockets are going to have to be blown away to make a deal happen and till that happens they’ll just keep their riches at center.
