Sanabia and the not so subtle spitter

Miami Marlins pitcher Alex Sanabia could be in some hot water after last nights game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Sanabia was caught on video doctoring the baseball after giving up a homerun to Domonic Brown. What did he do? He loaded up on saliva and let loose on the ball. After that he worked it in good with his hands. (H/T Fan Graphs)

What really stands out is that going into yesterday’s game Sanabia had a 5.00 era over 45 innings pitched, with eight homeruns allowed. He then goes and pitches against one of the better lineups in the league and gives up only one run, the Brown homer, over six and a third innings.

While it’s not likely that Sanabia gets in trouble for this incident, I’m sure opposing managers will be paying a lot closer to attention to the pitcher.

Over the past couple weeks we’ve heard a lot about pitchers doctoring the ball now, so I’m sure the umpires will be paying more attention too. This could explain why we went from the steroid era to another pitcher era in the flip of a light switch.
