No Doc on Opening Day

Roy Halladay has started ten consecutive Opening Days but it doesn’t look like that streak will continue in 2013. It’s no way indicative of his ability it’s just the Philadelphia Phillies big three is still that damn good. The team hasn’t announced their Opening Day starter yet but pitching coach Rich Dubee has said he’d like to split his lefties up this year.

I think it’s how we line up best,” Dubee said. “Realistically, we could pitch anybody the first day as far as Doc, Cole and Cliff. On most staffs, they are No. 1 starters, so they all could pitch opening day. But part of what we’re thinking is trying to split those two lefties. Last year we started with two lefties (after Halladay) and I’d just like to split them up.” (Philly.com – The Phillies Zone)

The obvious question now becomes who gets the Opening Day nod? Is it Cliff Lee or is it Cole Hamels?

In my opinion, you’ve got to go with Cole Hamels. In my opinion, Hamels is currently the best pitcher of the three and regardless of history should be the Opening Day starter. Cole Hamels IS the Phillies ace.

The good thing is there won’t be any proverbial feathers ruffled with the decision. All three are guys who have the big picture in mind and that’s the Phillies winning another World Championship. They’ve all had the chance to start Opening Day but are smart enough to realize come October that day meant nothing.
