Giambi closing in on a deal

After flirting with the then open Colorado Rockies head coaching job, Jason Giambi is instead close to signing a deal to keep playing baseball. Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that Giambi is close to signing a minor league deal with the Cleveland Indians, with an invite to spring training.

This is a great chance for Giambi to continue his career and hopefully help him in his desire to start a coaching career. In 2012, he hit .225 with only one home run and eight runs batted in over 113 at-bats.

In Cleveland, if he made the team he’d be a fill-in left handed hitting designated hitter with the threat of pop. He may not have the power he used to but his presence could still help the rest of the lineup when he plays.

I’m thinking the best thing for him is that he’d get a chance to teach a very young Indians team. He could further his reputation as a mentor and a guy who can teach others. If he does that he could set himself up better for any managerial or coaching vacancies for the 2014 season.
