The Boston Red Sox and free agent Mike Napoli initially had a three year contract in place, a deal that is pretty much voided now because of health concerns. Even so the player and team continue to talk and work towards a new deal. Jim Bowden of ESPN is reporting that the two teams are making significant progress towards a new, one-year deal.
The Red Sox and Mike Napoli have nothing to report but they continue to make significant progress towards a ONE-YEAR agreement

The team still has concerns over Napoli’s hip but still want him on their team in 2013. People are probably thinking if the Sox won’t give him the three year deal because of health why would they still give him a contract?
In my opinion, this is a good faith deal. One that says here’s a one year deal, show us you can stay healthy and we will reward you later. I could be totally wrong on that but it’s possible. If I am totally wrong it’s probably the only deal Napoli has on the table if he’s still negotiating with them.
Now if the Sox and Napoli do agree, I could see Mike still hitting 20 homers if he’s healthy. Which is exactly what the Red Sox are hoping for as he can’t do much else.
