Giambi out of running for Rockies job

Unfortunately for Jason Giambi he won’t be the next manager of the Colorado Rockies. The Denver Post reports that the team has narrowed the list of candidates to two. They are Matt Williams, who had a second interview yesterday, and Walt Weiss. The Post also says that Weiss is currently the favorite.

The Rockies have narrowed the search for their next manager to two candidates, Walt Weiss and Matt Williams, a major-league source confirmed Tuesday.

Weiss remains the favorite, the source said, but Williams was impressive in his meeting with the Rockies’ front office on Monday, prompting the team to take more time to make its decision. (Denver Post)

Rockies owner Dick Monfort, general manager Dan O’Dowd and senior vice president of major-league operations Bill Geivett are scheduled to meet for two days later this week. It’s expected that they’ll make a decision at those meetings. Only makes sense with free agency fast approaching they need someone in place that the players can look at and say I want to play for him.

With Giambi out of the running it’s expected that he’ll instead continue playing baseball. I don’t think he’ll get a chance to do so with the Rockies so I’m not sure where he’ll wind up. My guess is back in the American League where he can also DH.
