Rams look to upgrade o-line

The St. Louis Rams have finally realized that they need to upgrade their offensive line. While fans may not like the direction they’re going in that search I think it’s actually pretty smart. Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Rams are currently in talks with Atlanta Falcons center Todd McClure and Houston Texans tackle Eric Winston.

@jthom1: Rams are talking to Atlanta free-agent center Todd McClure, but nothing serious yet.

@jthom1: OT Eric Winston, the former Houston Texan, will visit the Rams and Baltimore

Many Rams fans will argue that McClure is way too old, he’s a 13-year veteran and nearing the end of his career but you know what? He still rated as the sixth best center in football last season. Wouldn’t you want a guy like that protecting oft-injured QB Sam Bradford?

It would also give the Rams an opportunity to draft a young guy and let McClure mentor him. Todd’s easily got another couple years in him which is more then enough time for to pass that knowledge on to the teams future. Which is where the team really needs to look.

Now with Winston he’d satisfy the fans craving for youth, well kind of. Winston will turn 29 in the middle of next season but the six-year pro has started every game for the past five seasons. Winston finished 2011 ranked as the sixth best right tackle and with his age and amount of suitors he won’t come cheap.

Those who wonder why the Texans would cut him should know it was strictly a cap clearing move.

In my mind, I’m thinking regardless of age it’s good to see that the Rams are addressing one of their glaring needs. The offensive line. There are no visits with either player currently scheduled.
