Gregg Rosenthal of ProFootballTalk and NBC Sports is reporting that the agent for BenJarvus Green-Ellis and the New England Patriots have had contract discussions. No word on what dollar figures they’ve been discussing but after reading Mike Reiss article on ESPN Boston I’m sure it won’t keep BGE from the free agent market.
RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis — He fits well with the offense and in the overall program. One would think team wants him back as long as the economics work. (Mike Reiss – ESPN Boston)
I agree with Reiss’ thinking BGE won’t be back with the Patriots unless it’s at a very team friendly rate. With his name they’ll be plenty of teams offering him a decent sized contract this off season but his production in 2012 doesn’t warrant big money.
Yes, he ran for for 1011 yards in 2010-11 but in 2011-12 he only ran for 667 yards. The statistic that stood out in my mind though was that his yards per carry average dropped from 4.4 to 3.7. That’s a pretty steep drop.
He’s not a special back he’s more of a system back. He does what the Patriots need run the ball up the middle just enough to keep defenses honest but lacks that dynamic ability that those special backs have. The ability to make defenders miss and take the ball to the outside. He also provides NOTHING in the passing game, nothing at all. Over four seasons he’s only caught 26 passes.
The Patriots know this and with Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen waiting in the wings they’ll be no need to overpay for a system back.
