It appears Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz doesn’t know what he wants. Just a week or so he said he’d consider playing for rival New York Yankees but now he says that was never his intention. The Boston Globe has a report up clarifying his comments.
“I never said I would sign with the Yankees. No, no, no,’’ he said. “They asked me if I would play with the Yankees. I said I would think about it. I didn’t say I would go to the Yankees. I’m still with the Red Sox, aren’t I?’’ (Boston Globe)
“Of course I would like to come back,’’ Ortiz said. “We have a lot of things going on right now, and once they go through this stuff, like the general manager and the manager, they’ll start talking to the players.’’ (Boston Globe)
I don’t believe him for one second. He absolutely, positively meant to say what he said about joining the Yankees. Papi knows he’s in for one tough negotiation with the Red Sox front office, especially after what just happened with Terry Francona and Theo Epstein. There are tons of changes on the way and he wanted the ownership to know he has no problems in joining the teams biggest rival.
I think he tried to clarify his statement because he realizes that the Yankees will have close to no interest in him. He’s probably realizing that 75% of the league has no interest in him, since he can’t play in the National League and half the American teams can’t afford him.
So his thinking was probably, “shit I can’t piss off the team I’m currently on I need a home in 2012″.
What I do find funny here is that another athlete blames the media for his words being taken the wrong way. Yes, the media prints the juicy quotes not the whole context but really when can these guys take responsibility for what they say?
