In a very surprising move Derrick Mason has indeed left the Baltimore Ravens and signed a contract with the New York Jets. Mason had contract offers from both teams and the Tennessee Titans.
“After a lot of very thoughtful and careful consideration, conversations with my family and prayer, I have decided to sign with the New York Jets,” Mason said. “I’m looking forward to working under Rex and rejoining some familiar faces.” (Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times)
Would have been a nice story to finish his career where it began in Tennessee but in all honesty I figured he back in Baltimore. Seeing him go to New York is a complete surprise to me but probably shows his intentions. Mason most likely wants to win a Super Bowl before he retires.
From a football standpoint I think this move is absolutely brilliant by the Jets and trust me I don’t use that word with the Jets often. This move protects the team if Plaxico Burress isn’t the player he once used to be. Yes, I know Mason himself isn’t the player he once was but at least he’s been on the field the last couple years.
This is a huge blow for the Ravens. After Anquan Boldin the Ravens have NO wide receiver worth mentioning on the roster. Rookie Torrey Smith is currently #2 on the depth chart. He should succeed down the road but a championship caliber team can’t go into the season that light at the receiver position.
So where do they go? Wilson thinks the Ravens will now target former Jets’ receiver Jerricho Cotchery which makes sense as he’s the best left on the market.
