Osi Has 5 Teams Interested

Since receiving permission from the New York Giants, Osi Umenyiora and his agent, Tony Agnone, have been busy working the phones. Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News is reporting that Osi now has five teams interested in trading for him. There is a problem thou and that’s the Giants asking price. First, who are the interested teams?

The five teams that have expressed an interest are the St. Louis Rams, the San Diego Chargers, the Seattle Seahawks, the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Ravens. It is not known which of the teams are the most interested, though a league source suggested the Ravens were unlikely and a source in Seattle said it was doubtful the Seahawks would be willing to give up a high pick and pay Umenyiora what he wants, too. It’s no surprise to me that none of these teams are willing to give up a first rounder. Osi is an aging vet, with a history of injuries and a high salary. Not to mention, he’ll want that high salary to go even higher once traded. With all of these teams having playoff potential they’re not going to wait till the late second round to make their first pick for someone who gets hurt easily.

Would the Giants be willing to lower the price? With what this organization has done in the past, I personally think it would be a long shot but not unthinkable. Remember a few years ago they wanted a first round pick for Jeremy Shockey. Eventually they gave in and dealt him to the New Orleans Saints for a 2nd and 5th rounder.

Could a similar package happen again? Definitely. Better believe the Giants will drag this thing out for a while first. The Giants are the ones with the upper hand in this situation; Osi is under contract and a star player that their defense could use. Luckily for them they also have depth at the position so they don’t have to budge to get him back into camp.

In my opinion, we’ll be hearing Osi rumors for at least another two weeks. I think if the Giants do deal him it won’t be till late in camp. They’ll do all they can to get him into camp or get what they want in return. If they decide neither will happen then they’ll move him but near the end of the camp leaving him little time to get ready for the season.

This makes me agree with league sources who think the St. Louis Rams the front runner. Question will be will ownership gives Spags the green light to add an aging vet to this up and coming team?

A few sources believe the team to watch in this is the Rams, where the obvious tie is their coach – former Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He knows what Umenyiora can do and how to use him, he knows Umenyiora will gladly play for him, and the Rams reportedly have plenty of cap room to spend.(New York Daily News)
