Once players are allowed to sign it appears that Vincent Jackson will sign his one year, $11.3 million tender with the San Diego Chargers. The move is somewhat surprising to me after Jackson sat out 11 games in 2010 after refusing to sign a $3.268 million tender. I guess an NFL star making only $280,823 for a “season” talks.
For all the noise about Jackson being unhappy and making demands that could have held up the CBA negotiations, he is expected to sign the franchise tender and collect his $11.3 million from the Chargers in 2011. Jackson has also made it known he desires to remain in San Diego long-term.
Asked if a productive season on the field and a second straight clean year off the field could mean a renewal of the Chargers’ interest in a long-term deal, Smith indicated that it would — on the Chargers’ terms and their timetable. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
Yes, you read that right. Jackson is now open to staying in San Diego long term. Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith says the team would be open to signing him to a lengthy deal. There is a catch thou, it would be on the teams terms.
“Vincent is a great player for us and we drafted him with high expectations,” Smith said. “As you know, we have decided to move slowly toward any long-term commitment at this time. But if he and his agents’ five-year, $50 million position remains steadfast, the odds are extremely high that he will be headed elsewhere. We have so many players to consider – both short-term and long-term over the next two years.” (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
I’m quite sure those long term talks will be quite interesting, I mean really we saw how messy things got last off season. Not many players are willing to sit out 11 games to get their money and not many teams will hold their ground the way they did.
Chargers fans can thank the lockout for this as Jackson knows his best move is just get to camp and prove himself. The Philip Rivers and Vincent Jackson combination should be explosive as always in 2011.
