Ever since he went to prison people have wondered what team will take a gamble on wide receiver Plaxico Burress. Since his release from prison those questions have picked up. If one is to believe Sports Illustrated’s Peter King there are many teams that are just not interested, at all.
I think I continue to be mind-boggled at the fact that there will be such a lack of interest (unless a lot of people I speak with about it are lying) in the unemployed, inexpensive and supremely motivated Plaxico Burress when free agency opens. Just stupid. In the right offense he’ll be the big target many teams lack, and, if healthy, he’ll catch 60-plus balls and be a good deep threat. At worst? He’s not going to cost much. What’s the downside? Rams, Browns? Tell me. I’m dying to know. (Peter King – SI.com)
I do and don’t agree with King on the lack of interest.
For a contender, I can totally understand them having little interest. Those teams are going to need to spend their minimal training camp time on getting new players up to speed and not worry about a distraction such as Burress.
For the non-contenders or teams on the cusp of contending, I agree with Kind what’s the downside? Plaxico has proven he can be a star on the big stage and help take a team to the next level. Yes, he’s been out of the game for a couple years but like Peter said, he’s motivated and key being INEXPENSIVE!
Personally, I think teams are just keeping their mouths shut right now. With the lockout no one should be making public what players they plan on courting, especially one fresh out of jail. Imagine the media attention a team would get right now if they said they were interested.
During the lockout it’s not worth getting that kind of attention. It could frustrate a fan base that may not want the receiver; it could also alienate them from other free agents. Free agents that could go, oh you’re interested in him and publicly but I’ve been on the field and you don’t mention me. It would be a public relations nightmare at this point.
Once this lockout ends I wouldn’t be surprised if we see quite a few teams start to show interest in Plax. You just won’t here it officially till then.
