Steve Smith – PUP Candidate?

Published on May 16, 2011 by   ·   No Comments

According to ProFootball Weekly it’s becoming likely that New York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith could start the season on the Physically Unable to Play list to start 2011.

The idea isn’t that far fetched as we haven’t heard many positive reports about his recovery, then again how could we? I mean there is a lockout going on. The most telling sign thou is that a few weeks ago Smith himself expressed concern about a loss of explosiveness.

It’d be unfortunate if Smith were to never regain the speed he once had. He was quickly becoming one of the top receivers and actually close to hitting elite status. Hopefully some extended time off would do his body good.

So, another sign that the Giants aren’t sure if he’ll be ready is the drafting of Troy University’s receiver Jerrel Jernigan. Jernigan is close in height to Smith and outstanding speed which makes him ideal for the slot position. The position formerly occupied by one Smith.

So say Smith did hit the PUP list, everyone would think Jernigan would be the one to replace him. I wouldn’t be so sure of that and ProFootball Weekly feels the same way.

Remember Victor Cruz, last year’s surprise performer in Giants’ training camp? Well, don’t count Cruz out for a roster spot this season. Steve Smith is coming off a serious injury, which opens up the possibility of him opening the season on the PUP list. Cruz’s development as a receiver, plus his special-teams ability, make earning a roster spot a possibility. (ProFootball Weekly)

Cruz was a breakout player in last year’s camp and quickly won over the hearts of Giants fans. I’m one that would love to seem him get a chance at the position, hopefully head coach Tom Coughlin gives it to him.
