Utley Back To Running Sprints

by Paul Raymond | Posted on Thursday, April 21st, 2011

A bit of good news for Philadelphia Phillies fans today, it appears second baseman Chase Utley is slowly getting stronger which makes a return in 2011 more likely. Jim Salisbury of Comcast SportsNet reports that the All-Star ran 10 sprints today in a light workout.

@JSalisburyCSN: Utley just finished about ten sprints in the OF. Looks to be getting stronger.

That’s great news to hear that Utley is getting stronger and able to complete such tasks. BUT let’s not get ahead of ourselves it’s still going to be a while before he returns.

My guess would be sometime in June, remember he’ll also need quite a few rehab games to get back into the swing of things. Rotoworld.com gives their opinion on his return.

(per RotoWorld) Utley looked quite spry during the light workout and appears to be making slow but steady progress. The Phillies have not offered a timetable for his return and he shouldn’t be expected back for at least another three weeks. It may even take until June for him to build enough strength around his knee.

The point with this post is just to let the fans know the slugger is working out and getting stronger. What once looked like a season lost to knee surgery looks like a possible mid-season return. This would be the best deadline trade you can make, a star returning from injury not costing a team any prospects.
