Today, the New York Yankees announced they’ll be voiding the contract of relief pitcher Luis Vizcaino. The reason? He blew out his Achilles tendon in late Dominican Winter League action, which is actually quite ironic since that’s what got him his Spring Training invite.
This really stinks for both sides as the Yankees, according to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, were very high on the righty. During early winter action is fastball was topping out in the mid-90s again and the Yankees thought he could be a factor in the majors.
In my opinion its not a huge blow to the bullpen, while it does effect the unit’s depth it shows again why Brian Cashman is stockpiling arms. In fact it’s the reason most teams try to get as much bullpen arms into camp as possible. Not only can one or two surprise you but you have other options should situations like this happen.
