With five months left on his prison sentence the rumors have started about Plaxico Burress return to the NFL. What team will he play for? Who’d be crazy enough to give him a chance? Well, everyone still seems to think it’s the New York Giants. The team he won a Super Bowl. The team he was a part of when his gun went bang. Me, I say what a bunch of bull!!!
The fans are saying the Giants because it’s the easy choice. It’s the team he won with, it’s the team he had the most success. It’s the sentimental choice, but since when does sentimental have anything to do with football? This is a business man!
The people who get paid to speculate know this is a business and thing it’s an extreme long shot that Plax makes his way back to the Meadowlands, well at least with the Giants.
John Crist of Scout.com says the Giants have one of the most productive trio of receivers in the NFL (when healthy) so where would Plax fit in? Yes, him and Eli Manning were an amazing duo but Eli has performed admirably without him, throwing for 4,000 yards each of the last two seasons.
Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, also mentions the Giants success with their current group of receivers but more importantly mentions the relationship between Plax and head coach Tom Coughlin. Here’s a quote from the post.
Tom Coughlin was never thrilled with Burress’ commitment to the team – - which, by the way, he values above all else. And, after he was gone, several players openly griped about how he refused to play by the rules. Coughlin has built his program around rules and discipline more than anything else.
Vacchiano also mentions the distraction that Plaxico would cause if he were to return to the Giants. Being in the Big Apple that distraction will be on a whole different level then if he played in another city. Would he be able to handle that pressure, more importantly would the team be able to deal with it? Especially when you consider they couldn’t get along with him before.
Personally, I don’t think there is a chance in hell that Burress winds up back with Giants. And as a fan of the Giants, I couldn’t be happier if I’m right, they don’t need him!

I wouldn’t say long shot. I think its a lot closer then you think. Coughlin dealt with Plax breaking rules, it won’t be something new. Plax maintains a great relationship with the owner. Tish visited him in jail and brought along his wife. Your super-rich boss who is no longer your boss shows up to see you in jail. I’m sure Plax respects and is greatful for that. My question is if its a smart deal to bring in an aging Plax who hasn’t played in yrs when you have a young talented WR core (not desperate for help)? for insurance/health reasons I can definitely see Plax back specially if he can’t find a more prominent role elsewhere.
