Falcons Ready To Talk

Despite an early playoff exit the Atlanta Falcons had a very successful season and look willing to reward some of their key players. Only thing is those players aren’t the ones in the game, FOX Sports NFL Buzz reports that it would be head coach Mike Smith and general manager Tom Dimitroff. That’s right owner Arthur Blank wants to keep the head of this monster in tact for many years.

FOXSports.com’s Jay Glazer reports Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank is expected to meet with head coach Mike Smith and general manager Tom Dimitroff early next week for multi-year extensions.

Personally, I can’t blame Blank at all for wanting to talk extension with these guys. The two of them have been very instrumental in turning the Falcons into consistent winners.

I’d have to say Dimitroff has done an amazing job putting this team together. Over the past couple years, he’s drafted Matt Ryan while signing free agents like Michael Turner and Tony Gonzalez. The Falcoholic loves his annual strategy of one free agent splash, then smart drafting and value shopping for depth.

Now, Smith has done a great job coaching that talent. He’s turned the trio of Ryan, Turner and Gonzalez into the leagues fifth highest scoring offense at 25.9 points per game. He’s also turned them into an efficient bunch as they were second in third down conversions, 46.7% and first in fourth down conversions by a mile, 73.3%. Also let’s not forget, the Falcons also had a lights out defense in 2010 as they only allowed 18 points a game, also good enough for fifth in the NFL.

If Dimitroff can continue to bring in the talent, imagine what Smith can do coaching them. That’s exactly got to be what Arthur Blank is thinking, I keep these two together the winning should continue.

The question is thou, how much money will it cost him to give both multi-year extensions?
