Marion Barber – The First To Go?

The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of work to do this off-season if they want to get back to the playoffs, that much we all know. But where do the ‘Boys start? Who do they let go? What area is of biggest concern? Well according to Dallas Morning News Cowboys writer Gerry Fraley, the first to go should be running back Marion Barber. Here’s a snippet from a recent Q&A he had with Dallas fans.

On why Marion Barber reacted the way he did after his touchdown last Saturday:

Fraley: He’s a selfish player who delights in drawing attention to himself. Marion Barber should be the first player out of the room after this season. … He carries himself in a very unprofessional manner. I’ve been around athletes who refuse to talk to the media, such as Steve Carlton. He respected my right to do a job, and I respected his request for privacy. He was a gentleman. I respect Barber’s refusal to talk to the media, but he shows now respect for us. He tries to be disruptive when other players meet their professional obligations.

Pretty strong words there, aren’t they? Basically here it sounds like Fraley and Barber just flat out don’t get along and his reasoning is based on personal reasons.

I can’t really talk about this much as I really don’t follow the Cowboys but based on a pure football stand point, I’d let Barber walk. He’s never rushed for more then a thousand yards and in 2010 has become a backup back to Felix Jones, and doesn’t even perform that well when he is in the game.

With Barber’s salary jumping to $4.25 million in 2011 and even higher in subsequent years then maybe its time go.

Like I said I don’t follow Dallas enough to really know about the situation. I’m more curious to hear what you Cowboys fans think of Fraley’s comment?

  1. Justin says:

Not even close to being a Cowboys fan, but the chatter on sportstalk radio in the area was blaming the Barber situation on poor coaching. I think the city is ready to see him go though and see what they have in Jones & Choice.

  2. Chris says:

Honestly, it sounds Iike Fraley just doesn’t like Barber. Barber may not be in the top ten in rushing yards, but he is very consistent when it comes to getting those couple of yards you need. I’d say that his lack of 1,000 yard seasons has more to do with play calling than his performance. If the Cowboys do get rid of him, there will likely be a few teams looking to pick him up. As for who the Cowboys need to get rid of first, it isn’t Barber – it’s Mike Jenkins. He has thrown the game away for the Cowboys more than once.

I don’t expect Barber to be in a Cowboys uniform next season… Although, I didn’t expect him to be in one this year.

I believe that Marion Barber should be let go from the Cowboys,he really don’t do anything on the field. But again I’m not the person who decides if he should stay or go..

  4. Keith H says:

Barber has never been good running side to side only up the middle. Once those shoulders turn to the sideline its over he does not have the speed to get to the outside but does have the strength to go up the middle for short down yardage. And this year he has not even been effective at that. I believe its time to go or reduce to third down back duties and less money. As far as jenkins hes always been only third string quality.

  5. [...] Cowboys are in for some major changes this off season, but where do they start. Not too long ago Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News suggested that Marion Barber be the first to go, that was based on personal opinion. Well into today’s mailbag, Fraley suggests the Cowboys [...]
