Just two weeks after regaining his starting job, San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith has lost his role. Troy Smith is being reinserted as starter for this weeks game against the St. Louis Rams. While I normally don’t agree with constant QB changes, I completely understand why coach Mike Singletary is doing so.
Amazingly the ‘Niners are still in the hunt for the NFC West Division Title. So that means the team needs to go with the player that gives them the best chance to win that. While neither Smith is starter quality, Troy does give the team the best chance to win THIS week.
In the 49ers last game against the Rams (Week 10), Troy played almost lights out football. He had a passer rating of 116.7, completing 17 of 28 passes for 356 yards, with one touchdown. Even more impressive he led the team on two late scoring drives against a pretty good defense.
In last weeks loss against the San Diego Chargers, Alex was an absolute dud. Alex completed 19 of 29 passes for 156 yards, while throwing one interception. Alex said it was the Chargers stingy defense, “It continued to get one-dimensional for us. When you play a defense of that caliber, they’re the No. 1 defense for a reason. They played well.”
After looking at those two performances, the 49ers are playing this like a playoff baseball team, go with your best matchups. And against the Rams, Troy gives San Francisco the best chance to win.
