Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis finally returned this past weekend from his groin injury, unfortunately for him he aggravated the injury early in the game. Jason Reid of the Washington Post reports that the injury could send Portis to the sidelines for the rest of the season.
“Is it possible? Anything is possible, bro, but who knows?” Portis said. “Gonna get an MRI [Monday] and we’ll see. I’m hoping it’ll be fine.”
Hopefully for Portis sake that doesn’t happen. If it does it could cost the nine year veteran a roster spot, potentially his career as well. Clinton is in the final year of his contract with the Redskins and I’d say its inevitable that the team does not resign him. Even if he were to return the team would be hard pressed to do so, as he just can’t stay healthy.
Portis used to be a workhorse, if he started 16 games he was guarantee 300+ carries a season, with well over 1,000 yards per. Unfortunately in the past two seasons, he’s only played 13 games (8 in 2009, 5 in 2010). It really looks like that heavy workload has caught up to him already and its unfortunate as he’s only 29.
Sadly, I think if he were to miss the rest of the season, his career could be over. The guys a worker and will do what it takes to get back in shape but I’m not sure if any team is going to be offer him a featured role. If he were to play in 2011, it’s going to be in a part time role. After his success would be willing to accept that?
