Former Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles pitching coach Leo Mazzone is interested in returning to the dugout. He’s been out of the game for three years and is very interested in working with pitchers again according to the Gary and Phillips in the Morning show on SIRIUS XM’s Mad Dog Radio. There’s one city that interests him more then any other, New York.
Host Gary Williams: “There are a lot of new staffs and, obviously, there’s an opening with the Yankees. Steve was effusive in praising you. Have you been contacted? I know you want back in. Any job in particular that is of interest to you?”
Leo Mazzone: “Yeah, there certainly is. And it has New York in front of it, too. I mean, it can be in the American League or the National League.”
No surprise there right? What household name coach or player, wouldn’t want his name to be considered with a New York team?
What I do find interesting thou, is the Yankees did have a strong interest in Mazzone a few years ago, 2005 to be exact. At that time, the Yankees were looking for someone to replace Mel Stottlemyre and they were turned down by Leo for the Orioles.
Yes, Leo turned the Yankees down to go to Baltimore!!! WTF!! Now he wants to be considered again? The Yankees never forget things like that, so if he’s truly interested then I hope he gave a pretty damn good reason back then.
Regardless of the past I’m thinking it won’t happen with the Yankees they’ve got a few worthy in house candidates.
Those options include Triple A pitching coach Scott Aldred and pitching coordinator Nardi Contreras. With most of their staff occupied by pitchers from the organization you would think they would want them to use the same type of coaches, right?
