The Cleveland Browns have hit their bye week and are about to have a serious question to answer, who plays quarterback. The Browns have used three of them this year due to injuries, Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace and the rookie Colt McCoy. All three should be healthy by the time they play again in Week 9 against the New England Patriots, so who do they go with? Wallace has a very strong opinion and that’s choose one, and stick with him.
“This isn’t college,” Wallace told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “We don’t switch quarterbacks in and out. I think when it comes down to rhythm and gelling together, when you have a quarterback in for one week and then the next week it’s somebody else, that’s not a good situation. You want a guy that’s gonna be in there, be able to move the team and continue to do that week to week.”
He’s got a great point, unless the Browns want to play for the number one draft pick they need to stick with one guy. The team will only grow and get better if the offense can rally behind one guy, especially since all three have different skill sets. So who would Wallace choose?? Himself, obviously.
“Yeah, I feel that way,” Wallace said. “At the end of the day, it comes down to the coaches. Whoever’s doing the job the best, moving the team, scoring points, making the right decisions, then that should be the guy.”
“That was probably the best I’ve felt,” Wallace said. “It’s a learning experience each game I step out there. We’re all still trying to figure it out. The Cincinnati and Atlanta games, things started feeling a lot smoother. Things started clicking. The offensive coordinator was calling good plays at the right time, and we had it going. Unfortunately I came down with an injury.”
First, I agree with Seneca on the fact the coaching staff needs to choose which guy will keep that offense moving. Whatever guy puts this team in the best position to win is the guy they need to go with.
ON that note, I have to agree with Seneca again, he’s the guy who does that. If he’s healthy, he’s currently the best they’ve got. I say currently because I do believe McCoy will be better but right now Wallace is best suited to lead this team.
In the five games he played the team looked pretty good. Wallace may not have the best yardage totals of the three but performance wise he does have better numbers with four touchdowns and a 88.5 passer rating. More importantly, the team was IN every game that he played, meaning they had a chance to win each of those games.
Seneca does what a team like this needs, he manages the game. The Browns don’t need a quarterback who can light things up right now, they just need someone who can keep them in the game and give them a chance to win.
The team’s worst loss during his tenure was against the Ravens, a game they were actually winning with nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Yes, I know they did lose by ten to Atlanta, a game Seneca started but it was Delhomme who threw a pick six in the fourth quarter. So plan and simple he’ll keep the offense moving and in the game, but more importantly won’t GIVE the game away.
I fully believe Wallace will be the Browns starting QB in Week 9 against the New England Patriots. For how long thou remains a question. If the team continues to lose, no matter how competitive they are, then Eric Mangini will have to turn it over to McCoy. Nothing beats live reps for a rookie and if the team has no chance at a respectable record then they might as well make the change.
Till then thou, Wallace deserves the chance to turn this ship around.
