The surgeries continue to pile up for the two teams involved in the 2009 World Series. Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco is scheduled to have left elbow surgery on Friday. The surgery will be to remove bone fragments from the elbow and repair his extensor tendon.
“The recovery time for this procedure is typically eight to 10 weeks, and we fully expect Placido to be ready by Spring Training, but we’ll know more after the surgery,” Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said in a statement.
Polanco played almost all of 2010 with the bone fragments, receiving four cortisone shots throughout the season. The career .303 hitter, hit only .260 in the month of September. Things got even worse in the playoffs where he hit only .207 with four runs and five runs batted in.
In my opinion, Polanco’s playoff slump hurt more then some of the ones his teammates experienced as he’s a catalyst for this team. When he’s gets on base that Phillies offense takes on a whole new life.
Hopefully this surgery gets him back to a legit 100% cause that Phillies offense will definitely need him in 2011.
Speaking of feeling healthy I thought it was kind of comical when Polanco said before the NLCS, that he was 100%, “But if I swing a certain way, or I hit \[the elbow\], it goes back to maybe 70 or 60 percent. It depends on how hard you aggravate it.” (courtesy of Philly Daily News)
