Why Isn’t TO Signed Yet?

So we’re a few weeks into free agency now and one star wide receiver is still on the open market, Terrell Owens. We all figured that he’d sign late in free agency mainly because teams are wary of taking the always disgruntled “super” star. My main concern thou is the complete lack of interest, from anyone. Yes, the Cincinnati Bengals brought T.O. in for a visit but how come no one else come calling??

Is it his attitude? Is it the possibility of clubhouse turmoil? Is it his declining skill set? I’d have to say they all play a role but the main issue being his salary demands.

John Czarnecki of FOX Sports reports agent Drew Rosenhaus is still asking for a team to give Terrell Owens $5 million for the 2010 season. That’s an extremely large amount for any player this off season, let alone one that comes with the type of baggage Owens does.

In 2009 with the Buffalo Bills, Owens made $6.5 million and didn’t even come close to earning his money. Owens only caught 55 passes, which equates too $118,181 a catch. Yea, over 100k a catch, insanity!!! Let’s look into this even more, Owens only gained 829 yards, that’s $7,840 per yard. The guy was stealing Buffalo’s money last season.

In past years the main knock on signing or trading for Owens has been his diva type history but this year I really feel its different. I think teams are really scared at signing Terrell at the $5 million price tag, especially when you add in that declining skill set.

Let’s look at his last 3 seasons.

2007 – Dallas Cowboys – 81 catches, 1355 yards and 15 touchdowns
2008 – Dallas Cowboys – 69 catches, 1052 yards and 10 touchdowns
2009 – Buffalo Bills – 55 catches, 829 yards and 5 touchdowns.

First, I’ll completely discount the touchdown decline, last year he did play on the Bills atrocious offense. He definitely did not have as many opportunities as in previous years. But you can’t discount the decline in receptions and yardage from.

His 55 catches in 2009 was T.O.’s lowest total since 1999, that’s ten years! (I’m ignoring his 2005 season with the Philadelphia Eagles as he only played in seven games). Can I discount this to playing for the Bills? Yes and no. His 2008 total of 69 catches was also his lowest total since 1999 and there is no way you can say the Cowboys offense was just as bad.

Let’s look at yardage. His 829 yards in 2009 was his first season under 1,000 since 1999, again ten years. I bring up the same point I made about the receptions. You again can’t say its because he played for the Bills. In 2008 he gained 1052 yards, also his lowest total since 1999.

While Owens may think he is still one of the best receivers in the NFL the numbers don’t lie. His numbers have been in a steady decline for a few years and he can’t blame it on his quarterbacks anymore. He’ll turn 37 during the 2010 season maybe its just father time finally catching up with him.

So is there a team out there that might be willing to give Owens what he’s looking for??? Czarnecki thinks there is, the Chicago Bears.

Because the Chicago Bears have pushed all their chips into the middle of the poker table in order to win now, they look like a good team to land Owens, even if his style doesn’t suit the Mike Martz offense. He remains a name and still has enough speed that Jay Cutler can’t overthrow him.

In theory it makes sense, the Bears are light on draft picks and have gone on a free agent spending spree. They’re playing for now and adding Owens could be another piece to the puzzle as they try to catch the Minnesota Vikings. It would also give quarterback Jay Cutler a big target to throw too, even if he does drop about ten of those passes a year.

I’m thinking it won’t happen thou, cause when does anything make sense with Terrell Owens??? I say Owens is still on the market after Draft Day.

T.O is still a good receiver. He will be signed after draft day. There are several teams that he could help. I know that this comment will get those T.O hating comments but this has nothing to do with his arrogant attitude.

  2. fred says:

TO is not signed because he’s old, washed up, and is a pain in the booty.

Dancing with the has been stars is his only next move.

  3. B'Button says:

Are you guys football fans or what? Just cause he had problems with his QB doesnt make him a bad player. First let start with Jeff Garcia he couldnt hit anybody let alone win the big game. In greenbay against the packer in the cold weather he acted like he never played in cold weather and was constanly over throwing receivers. Donavan McNabb choked in the super bowl, need I say more. With over two minute left in the game there was no urgency on his part and T.O had the best receiving day in Super bowl history. Tony Romo joke! I can’t throw to anyone other than my tight end. Buffalo and it QB problems were garbage. This guy come to camp in the best shape and ready to play.

  4. randy thomas says:

i think t.o could realy help the bears i mean if anything else he could help the young receivers out so i say sign him but try to get the money down a little.

  5. riverA says:

I Think the Bears are a great fit for T.O., it’s about time the Bears start winning. And T.O. IS the key

  6. Xandar_Jax says:

T.O. would be great for the Eagles rebuilding year. If they can unload McChoke/Vick and then start Kolb, he can throw to a Pro and get some wind under his wings for an AVERAGE career with the Birds, backing up the next guy…

  7. I would sign TO in a heartbeat.this is the guy who came back to play in the superbowl for the Eagles after doctors said he couldn’t play.Oh i dont even know the quarterbacks name in Buffalo but I see #81 jersey on in the stands more than any other number this past season.I believe the right team with a seasoned QB will make the difference in #81 regaining his great Receiver Status, which he is still in great athletic condition.

  8. Scott says:

Most teams will wait until after the draft and maybe even after the next round of cuts in June to see who else is available or who they might get in the draft. I say the longer T.O. sits the more willing he will be to take less money. Jaguars, Bears, Seattle, Tampa, Carolina, Cleveland, and maybe even the Bills again could all use him at a lower price.

  9. Jaimus Rendon says:

This guy is a cancer Big mouth me me me Type of player I would rather my team end up in last place than have this A-Hole on my team, please Chicago don”t do it but watch there lousy coach do it to try and protect his job, he knows that this is last year. by the way RAIDERS SUCK

  10. Kenneth says:

To all T.O.haters,Let me tell you’ll something. He is one of the best WR in the NFL today and will go down in history as the best.So age don’t mean nothing buddy. The guy looks good and definitely in top shape. So trust me, some team out there needs that man help.Remember anybody will an attitude when you have certain overated teamates that’s sorry and can’t get the ball to one of the best WRs in the NFL.

  11. To Carolina with steve smith and matt moore

  12. BILLY PORTER says:

TO ARIZONA BABY ITS TIME,THE VALLEY OF THE SUN.were right there we need your help to turn this in to football country bro come on.PLUS WE HAVE A MEAN COACH WHOM WILL LISTEN IF YOUR RIGHT.

  13. Barry Sanders says:

T.O is a cry baby and doesnt care about his team. If he could quit crying and consintrate on his playing as a team he would be a good fit anywhere.

  14. Kristen says:

I bet TO has a huge wang..

  15. lake says:

When you have to look his way every play to make him happy,of course he`s going to have decent numbers.

  16. James C. says:

The person who wrote this article needs to go back to school and learn how to write.

“I’m thinking it won’t happen thou”. Thou? As in Thou Shall Not Kill?

“It would also give quarterback Jay Cutler a big target to throw too”. Too? Hahaha!

T.O.’s agent is asking for too much this off-season. If he wants T.O. to play again, he needs to drop the asking price to at least 2 million even. It’s not like T.O. will starve to death, lose his homes or run out of money to pay for someone to wax his luxury cars everyday. He should go to any team that will have him and if he is smart, he should shut his trap but play aggressively and with more enthusiasm to win. Even if his new team does not make the playoffs next season, he should at least prove people wrong that he has another 2-3 years left in him.

  17. randy thomas says:

I think that maybe 3.5 would be a goog deal for one year with an option on the second that would be a good deal for both sides

  18. john pennick says:

i think our organization needs to sign t.o. 4 another season and go after vick.with that talent 1-2-3 punch with evans you cant go wrong.

  19. rod says:

T/O IS A PAIN AND DESTROYS TEAMS TELL HIM TO RETIRE HE WONT BE MISSED

  20. TONY T. says:

I think the BEARS have to really think about it. I’d rather try and get Steve Smith to come over from Carolina !!! (SUPER BOWL SHUFFLE) if Steve comes to Chitown! But you know that can’t happen.

  21. Cedric S. says:

T.O. is still a better than avg WR. He’ll be signed to a one year deal again by some team after daft day. His contract will not be for the 5 mil he’s asking for but for more like 3.5 mil with incentives. Teams that will consider him will be: Bears, Cardinals, Ravens, Panthers and the Jets (although it’s a longshot but you just can’t count on Braylon Edwards).

  22. mike says:

TOis played out,What do you do to a whippet who cant race anymor on the dogtract.RETIRE

  23. Mike W says:

he will not sign at all cuz he is to old

  24. Freddie says:

The guy is a total idiot and should not play this year. He is garbage and his attitude has finally done him in!

  25. Brad Flahart says:

Simple answer to stupid question…. Owens is more concerned with Twitter followers than Super Bowl rings. He wants to own huddles and run show. If he would shut up and play football, lose the garbage reality show, that may go a long way.

  26. Van says:

I am a cowboys fan and I just want to say that I really miss TO. Roy Williams isn’t in the league of a TO. And just for all you haters, you can hate all you want but football is football and TO has already proven himself. He is a Hall of Famer. He will land somewhere and watch how he helps that team win, all they need is a decent QB and a line that allows him to throw! TO is a good target with heart and doesn’t mind going across the middle…that in itself is worthy of taking him, not many receivers are willing to do that anymore!!!

  27. Majik22 says:

T.O. is still one of the best recievers that the game of professional football has ever known. He is better at 37 years old than 90% of those 22-36 years old WR’s in the entire NFL. Houston Texans should be jumping for joy that nobody has signed him, and should be giving this guy the key to the city. T.O. and Andre Johnson would be the best 1-2 tandem of recievers in the NFL, should Houston make that choice and sign him to a couple of years@ $4m-$5m per year. Then Houston needs to go out and get a running back like Jahvid Best or Ryan Matthews to pound that rock. No team in the NFL can devise a defense to corral that type of firepower.

  28. Barkley says:

The writer of this article, Johnson, is just another mediocre-at-best journalist STILL riding on the coattails of the great W.R., Terrell Owens! They know everyone goes right to whatever article is written about T.O.; some hoping it’s criticizing him; others ready to defend him.

I’m the latter. Terrell Owens at his age, is still better than most w.r.’s out there…. and at least a step better than most premium receivers, with the possible exception of Randy Moss. Moss is also “proven”…even though a lot of people criticized Randy as well.
So, Johnson, find another topic on your “slow” days…. Terrell Owens will be in the HOF if he never played another game in the NFL. He is a great football player, with a terrific work ethic, and a totally clean personal life… exemplary in fact. So shut your piehole, Johnson.

This comment page is “Designed by StyleWP”…and it stinks! Why have I commented a couple times, and the comments NEVER show up? Where is the “continued” or “next” page?

Style WP, or someone responsible for this should be replaced with a competent web designer.

Purpose of my comments was to defend Terrell Owens…. a brilliant and slam dunk for the HOF if he never played another game. It turns my stomach how cheap journalists keep riding on his coattails with their cheap shots. More fans out here love T.O. than some of these talentless writers realize. Johnson is a dime a dozen writer. A moron.
