End of the Road for BWest?

Philadelphia reporter Howard Eskin said on last nights NBC Philadelphia’s Sports Final and his own 610 WIP show that Eagles running back Brian Westbrook may be forced to retire this off season. The reason of course being injuries, but not the concussions like one would think.
Yes, he suffered two pretty harsh concussions during the season but the back feels like he’s healthy enough from those to continue his NFL career. So what would keep him from playing next season? His left knee.
He’s played at a high level for a few seasons causing considerable wear and tear, in addition to that he’s had a couple of surgeries on the knee. Eskin says that even if doctors say he can play he may not even be able to pass a physical. Which could be a huge problem if the Eagles release him.
BWest is due a $7.25 million salary in 2010 and with him turning into a part-time running back it’s not likely that the Eagles would want to pay him that kind of money. Actually, Eskin says there’s “almost no chance” of the Eagles paying that.
Can’t blame them with a back like LeSean McCoy waiting in the wings. In 2009, McCoy ran for 637 yards and caught 40 passes. The Eagles also went 7-1 in games when McCoy was the featured back.
If the knee injury forces Westbrook to retire it will be a shame. As a Giants fan I’ll be thrilled not to see him tearing our defense apart twice a year. But at the same time it sucks that a great career will end this quickly.
