Bulger Out With Knee Fracture

Just when you think the St. Louis Rams season couldn’t get any worse, it does. Jay Glazer at FOXSports reports that quarterback Marc Bulger will be out three to six weeks with a fractured knee cap. The injury is more technically known as a tibial plateau fracture. So the new starting QB for the Rams is Kyle Boller.

In addition to the fractured kneecap, Bulger was dealt a blow to the head and may have a concussion. That all makes week 11 a pretty rough one for the veteran. The head injury was the one most thought would cause him to miss the week 12 contest against the Seattle Seahawks.

But wait it gets even worse, in addition to the blow to the head AND the fracture, Bulger also had a MRI on his groin area, which disclosed a strained going. This guy is just all banged up and unfortunately for him its at the worst point of his career.

Bulger signed a six-year contract extension with the Rams back in 2007 but is easily expendable as 2010 he starts to become a heavy financial burden. Next year his base salary grows to $8.5 million with a cap hit of $10.5 million. Those are big numbers for a 32-year old, injury prone quarterback whose numbers have been on a steady decline.

One would think that the Rams are already scouting the big name quarterbacks who may enter the 2010 NFL Draft. Currently they’re tied for the worst record in football with the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So no matter where the coin flip puts them they’re in great position to land a franchise QB.

Do they draft one and keep Bulgers’ salary? It’s highly unlikely, which is why this injury has come at the worst time in his NFL career.

If you hear that the Rams placed Bulger on injured reserve this week then I’d say his fate is sealed. He’s a goner.

BUT

If the Rams give it a couple weeks and see if he can make it back to the field, then it might not be so. That to me would indicate the Rams want to give him a chance to keep his job.
