Not to long ago the Washington Nationalswere discussing a deal with the San Francisco Giants for Nick Johnson. After a flurry of trades out west those talks are dead. There is still one team interested in Johnson thou and that’s the Florida Marlins. Ken Rosenthal reports that a deal between the two sides could happen by the deadline.
Initially the Marlins were offering minor league pitcher Ryan Tucker, currently in AAA. Not a bad offer considering Nick Johnson is projected to fall short of being a Type B free agent. With him falling short, the Nationals would receive no compensation when he signs elsewhere, so really they should just take what they can get. But they aren’t and they’re playing tough with the Marlins.
Rosenthal says that the Nationals have convinced the Marlins to add another player, in exchange for the Nats paying part of Johnson’s salary. There’s no word on whom the player is and how talented of one it is.
If the Marlins complete this deal it will definitely help them out depth wise as they compete for the National League Wild Card.
