With the threat of a holdout looming the New York Jets and running back/kick returner Leon Washington are closing in on a contract extension. The NY Daily News is reporting that the two sides are close to a deal and Leon should be in camp Friday when it opens, maybe even by tonight’s reporting deadline.
There’s no official word yet on what the contract will be but it will be a significant increase from his scheduled salary of $535,000. The Jets have been offering $2 million, he’s been seeking $6 million so common sense would say just settle in the middle, right? That’s probably what they’ll wind up doing settling somewhere around there.
Wouldn’t be a bad deal for the back up back He only carried the ball 76 times and caught 47 balls, expect those carries to increase making that type of money, even thou many don’t believe he’s an every down back. His real value comes as a kickoff returner, he’s one of the elite ones in the league averaging 25.8 yards a return last year, with 4 career return touchdowns.
