Curry To The Rams

In a rare NFL player for player trade the St. Louis Rams acquired Ronald Curry from the Detroit Lions. In return the Lions get defensive tackle Orien Harris. This is surprisingly a trade that makes a lot of sense, even if it damages the ego of Curry.

It’s been a rough year for Curry. He fell off the face of the earth this year while playing for the Oakland Raiders only catching 19 balls over 13 games. For the first time in his career he also averaged less than 10 yards per catch, leading scouts to claim the 30-year old has lost a step. But it gets worse.

Curry became a free agent and signed with the Lions in April. The trade means he couldn’t even earn a roster spot on a winless team!! If that doesn’t say you lost a step, I don’t know what does. But in actuality the trade is not as bad as it seems.

The Lions are pretty stacked at receiver after acquiring Dennis Northcutt to pair with Calvin and Bryant Johnson. So now he moves on to a situation in St. Louis which is very favorable to him.

The Rams are very light at the receiver position with the only proven commodity being the speedy Donnie Avery. With Curry being a possession type of receiver he could conceivably win a starting job opposite of AVery if he proves he’s still got “it” in camp. On third down and passing situations he’s most likely move to the slot, so Laurent Robinson or Keenan Burtan can take the other speed spot.

While all appeared lost, Curry is now in a position where he can prove he is still a legitimate NFL receiver. I think he could easily get back to a 40-50 catch season and average a little over 10 yards a reception. With Avery on the outside and Steven Jackson bruising defenses there should be plenty of chances for him to do his thing.

Oh and don’t forget he now moves indoors to the infamous Edward Jones Dome turf. So yea I wouldn’t worry about that loss of speed.
