Ian Happy To Be Back

Back on May 13th, New York Yankees pitcher Ian Kennedy underwent surgery for an aneurysm under his right arm pit. The original timetable for him to begin throwing was six to eight weeks from time of surgery. Well here we are, Tuesday will be six weeks and Ian is back in Scranton. The Scranton Times Tribune reports that Kennedy is back with the club and ready to start working out.
Unfortunately, Ian hasn’t been given the green light to start throwing yet. What he is allowed to do is work out, something he’s been doing ever since the surgery. The most of what he’s been doing are strength exercises, including ones that simulate a throwing motion.
This is a good thing. Once he’s able to start throwing those muscles will already be strengthened and it shouldn’t take as much time to get his arm worked up to a competitive level. At least one would hope.
Regardless we shouldn’t expect to see Ian pitching in any Triple A games anytime soon. Once he’s allowed to start throwing (hopefully soon) it will take some time to get the feel for his pitches back. So he won’t be back till after the All-Star game.
The good news for Yankee fans is it was the same injury as David Cone. And we all know how he did after the surgery, seven innings of no-hit ball in his return and a World Series win. And let’s not forget a perfect game a few years later.
It would be wonderful if Ian could ever do any of those things. But I’ll be happy with him becoming a productive pitcher for the Bronx Bombers.
