Just two weeks ago, Tom Glavine was released by the Atlanta Braves. After his release he ripped the team and general manager Frank Wren, saying he could still pitch in the majors. Obviously the team and no other team has believed him as Glavine sent Fox Atlanta a message on Thursday. A message that he won’t be pitching in 2009.
Via text message, Glavine wrote: “I’m not going to pitch or do anything in baseball until at least next year.” Glavine according to Fox 5, saying he plans to be “a full-time dad.”
For one thing, I’m not surprised no team has called the 44-year old. I’ve felt he’s been done for a few years now, well I’ll be honest to me any player is done once they become a New York Met. Over the past three seasons his ERA has ballooned from 3.82 to 5.54. Other telling numbers such as WHIP and BAA have also been rising significantly. It hasn’t been pretty.
With Glavine taking the 2009 season off, I don’t see how he’ll ever return to a big league mound. After surgery in 2008 and then taking a full season off there’s no way any team would give him a chance. How could they?
He could happen to be fully recovered from his offseason surgeries. He could possibly have a stronger arm then he’s had in many years. But that’s highly unlikely.
To put it simply, Glavine’s retiring but not retiring. He’s trying to have his cake and eat it too. He sees the end coming but is fighting it.
I’d have to say, Tom enjoy the time with the kids this summer, you’ll realize it’s time to start the next phase of your life.
