Jets Working On Lito Trade?

UPDATE at 9:10 PM: ESPN is reporting Lito Sheppard has been dealt to the New York Jets for a 5th round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, and a conditional 2010 draft pick.

The New York Jets working on a trade for Lito Sheppard? According to the NY Daily News there’s a chance a deal could be worked out with the Philadelphia Eagles. At the moment, no one knows what the Jets would be willing to give up but there is a meeting scheduled between the team and Lito for Saturday. If there is a visit between the two then the Jets must be offering the Eagles something of value.

If a deal could be made this would be a win-win for all parties involved. For the Jets they’re looking for aggressive players who can handle an aggressive playing Rex Ryan defense. So far they’ve done a good job in getting that type of player, i.e. Bart Scott, if they could add more even better. And let’s see Lito has played in one of the most aggressive defenses in the NFL his whole career. He’s proven he could be left on his own in coverage and not be a liability. He’s proven he can handle blitzing and be a nuisance to the quarterback. If the Jets could land him they’ve got a solid second cornerback to go with their ace Darrelle Revis.

For Lito Sheppard, he’d finally get out of hell. Yea, hell. For Lito, Philadelphia has been hell the past year. With Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown starting, Lito was pretty much irrelevant. By the end of the season he wasn’t getting any playing time. It was so bad he didn’t even play in the NFC Divisional or NFL Championship games. To get out of Philadelphia would be huge, but to get into a defense like the Jets will be that much even bigger. It would also be a boost to his ego to know that top defensive coaches want him involved in their game plan.

The biggest winner would still be the Philadelphia Eagles. They’ve been trying to unload this guy for the better part of a year now but couldn’t find a deal to their liking. Did they waver? No, they stood their ground with both the player and other teams. Dumping Lito would finally rid themselves of his bloated contract and bring in some solid draft picks. Will they land the first rounder they’ve been looking for? I’m not sure but if the Eagles are letting Lito visit New York then the Jets might just be willing to give it up. So it could wind up the Eagles stood their ground, got what they wanted and even shipped him to the other conference.

Eagles fans you might finally get your wish and get this guy out of town. If they can bring in a first rounder for him, could the Eagles then offer 2 of their 3 firsts for Anquan Boldin? Hmmmm could get interesting!
