Another Winter With Favre Drama

Brett Favre - Will he retire? It looks like we are all in for another long winter of Brett Favre drama. Will he or won’t he retire? You know the New York Jets season just ended and I’m already tired of hearing about it. If it goes all winter and spring long I’m quite sure many of us sports bloggers and NFL fans are going to just lose our minds. For what it’s worth thou it sounds like this might finally be it for the aging star.

Favre recently talked to Ed Werner of ESPN and it looks like his career might be coming to a close. Unfortunately it will take a great while to find out his official decision, as Favre will be taking a month to clear his mind and then make the decision. He’s doing so at the request of Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum who wants Favre to completely remove himself from football before making the decision. “He said he’s not going to bother me for three or four weeks,” Favre said. “He told me to do whatever and he’d give me a call in a month. Maybe I will tell him my answer that day. But he told me to get away and don’t even think about football.”

That’s not a bad idea really, step away from football let the season sink in. In the interview, Favre also takes a lot of the responsibility for the teams collapse, and its rightfully so. Injury or no injury, he was very inaccurate down the stretch, even more so then he usually is in the big game. “I’m not going to make any excuses,” he said. “If I’m going to play, then I have a responsibility to play at a high level, and I just didn’t get it done. I tried to be the best leader I could be, do all the right things and, as I look back, I have no regrets. I wish we would have gone farther, but I did all I could.”

There is one thing that should definitely play a major role in his decision. And that is his teammates. Do they want him back? Did he really fit in with the Jets? Can he handle the criticism that some players like Thomas Jones directed towards him after the season? “I told Tony that the one thing that most concerned me was that I wanted to play well, but I wanted to fit in,” Favre said. “I was always ‘The Guy’ in Green Bay even through a lot of turnover, and I remained the same and feel like I left a good impression there from that standpoint. That’s what I wanted to do in New York. I wanted those guys to say whenever I left, ‘There’s a reason that guy played that long.” It will be interesting to see what the guys say now after hearing this interview.

The most interesting part in the interview is that Favre says he plans on making his decision quietly, unlike last year. Does anyone really believe this? I don’t know if I do. Can Favre do anything quietly? That’s gone against everything he’s done and said in his entire career. Why all of a sudden would he now? Is he that embarrassed by the collapse of the New York Jets?

“I’m an emotional guy, and I’m sure people are tired of seeing me get emotional,” he said. “People would probably say, ‘Oh, here he goes again.’ I think it would just be better for me to just thank the Jets, and I sincerely mean that. It was well worth what I invested. But I’m going to just quietly step away if that’s what happens.”

I’ll believe it when I see it. In the end thou I just hope it all happens quickly because I can’t take another offseason of hearing Brett Favre’s name non-stop. Here’s the Sports Center clip talking about Favre.

Solid write up. I wonder how much can Favre take from the NY media if he is wishy washy with this decision during the off season.
