Some relief pitching hit the open market today, well actually one pitcher has been made available. The Chicago Cubs activated closer Kerry Wood from the disabled list, which made Scott Eyre expendable. Eyre was designated for assignment, and has already cleared waivers. By clearing waivers the team now has 7 days to trade him, if that doesn’t happen he becomes a free agent.
There are plenty of teams that could show interest in Eyre. I think the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies are the two teams that would make the most sense thou. The Sox have been in need of relief help for a while now, so much so they’ve decided to give Joe Borowski a contract. The Phillies well they acquired no one to help their bullpen, which is currently suffering with Tom Gordon on the DL with his annual shoulder inflammation.
If either of these two, or any other team decide to take a stab at Eyre, its definitely buyer beware. He’s spent time on the DL this year as well, with elbow and groin issues. His stats? Not pretty, 7.15 era in just 11 and 1/3 innings. Have fun trying to sell that pick up to your fans!
