The passing of the trade deadline hasn’t stopped the Boston Red Sox in their quest for bullpen help. The Boston Herald is reporting that the team has offered former Cleveland Indians closer Joe Borowski a minor league contract. Now bringing in Eric Gagne last year wasn’t enough, the Sox now want to bring in another bum former closer. If he accepts the deal he’ll play down in Triple-A and work on getting back in to game shape. Then if he is healthy he winds up a very good insurance policy should there be any injuries at the major league level.
Borowski was released early in the season by the Indians after a horrendous start to the season, sporting a 7.56 era with 6 saves in 16 innings. Borowski was never lights out as the teams closer, in 2007 he had a 5.07 era in 65 innings, but yet he did get the job done saving 45 games.
On a side note offering the deal this early, Borowski will be eligible for post-season play. Per major league rules a player only has to be part of an organization by September 1st, he doesn’t need to be on the roster yet. Just what Red Sox fans want to see, Borowski on the mound in the playoffs, should they make it.
