Pushing team officials? thats just Manny being Manny

Manny being MannyJust one week after Houston Astros pitcher Shawn Chacon fought General Manager Ed Wade, we hear of another baseball player shoving team officials around. This time it was Boston Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez. Manny reportedly pushed the teams traveling secretary, Jack McCormick, to the ground in an argument over free tickets. The Red Sox don’t seem to be taking this to seriously, but shouldn’t they? Let’s look at the incident.

Ok the story goes that Manny requested 16 tickets for Saturday’s game against the Houston Astros. McCormick told him that might not be possible as Ramirez requested those tickets on the day of, Manny’s response? “Just do your job.” The two then began shouting and Manny proceeded to push McCormick to the ground. That was it, as the argument was then broken up. Manny then apologized and then went to speak with GM Theo Epstein.

“When things happen with us we take things really seriously and hopefully we deal with things respectfully with all the parties,” Francona said. “But we also do it internally. This was something that actually happened between friends. It was handled. It’s private even though I know it’s public and everyone is going to write about it. We handle things how we handle them and we’re comfortable handling it like that.”

That pretty much sounds like the two hugged it out and made up, so lets not make any more of this. But is that the right thing? This is Manny’s second shoving incident this month, remember just a few weeks ago him and Kevin Youkilis got into a minor scuffle in the dugout DURING a game for all to see. For someone who is supposedly such a fun and loving guys he’s sure had quite a bit of a temper as of late. Two incidents like this in a month span should resort in some type of fine at least, shouldn’t they?

The thing that gets me the most upset isn’t even the lack of discipline on this matter. It’s the fact that this all involved FREE tickets. Manny makes an insane amount of money and wants to lose his cool because he can’t get 16 free tickets the day of. He’s got enough money where he can go offer to buy Joe Nobody’s tickets for the game and still have oh way to much money left in his pocket.

A lot of people will want to draw some comparisons to the Shawn Chacon incident, I’m not going to do that. I will just say that Chacon did bring the topic of internal clubhouse fights to the national spotlight and that may make this topic a bigger incident than it is.

“I’m going to activate myself, even if I’m hurting, because I have this sword that can control the beast of Manny Ramirez,” David Ortiz said.

Now that is some funny stuff, and why David Ortiz is the fun guy of that team not that character in left field.

But what are your takes on the incident? Do you think he should be penalized? Is there a double standard being applied as he’s a star and Shawn Chacon is a scrub?

There’s still plenty of baseball left, and its going to be a busy summer at Fenway. You should definitely check out the action there as its one of the best places to catch a game.
